I am male and my main is female, though I have an even split of alts. I like having a female main because of the glamour options. Who knew dress-up was so fun? lol

As for inspiration, my main alt, which matches my forum name, is the generic character I use for most RPGs with character creation. I started off with him as my main in the 1.0 beta. Early on I decided to make a female alt, largely for the aesthetic reasons mentioned above.

I have a group of four siblings from an old D&D campaign I ran in college, who are (very) loosely based on my own family. My go-to female character was always the older of the two sisters. However, a friend was playing a character with a very similar name to hers, so I switched to the younger sister. She ended up becoming not only my FFXIV main, but my new go-to female character. I do have the other three siblings as retainers. I was going to use them as alts, but having five Hyur characters is boring.

It really depends on what the character customisation is like for me. I tend to like making my character look cool and a big part of that is the gear. Most games tend to make female armours sexy and male armours too buff but although FFXIV does that too I at least have other options which is fun. So I have an even mix of both. I'm male btw.

"do you play the opposite gender in FFXIV; if so, why?"

Sometimes. I fantasia a lot, at this time I am using a male character. Why? Because sometimes I feel conflicted, I like cute clothes and fashion, females have more choices and their gear looks great on them. But I prefer male characters in this game, they have better emotes, better stances while on a mount and better voice and hairstyles. I like to feel identified as a male in the game, even if my character looks androgynous or feminine.

I'm female and I play a female character as my main because for me it's more fun to dress up a girl. I like frilly dresses with roses, lace, bows, flowers and so on. Also, you (or rather: I) can use a wider variety of colors for females. Yes, I do know I can also dress a male character in pink clothes, but I personally do not like that kind of look.

I have two male alt characters though. I really like to play as them but it's nearly not as nice to glamour them because I have so few options that I like. There are many glamour options for male characters but I just have a specific taste. With the Royal Seneschal's Coat, the High House Justaucorps and the Hannish Wool Autumn Shirt I have 3 options for chest pieces... and colors like black, white, dark red, blue... It would be a little boring if my main weren't female. (I hope no one feels offended by my personal taste now.)

So I play both but prefer to play female characters because of the glamour options. ^^

I rarely play as the opposite sex in games unless I have to. I've tried a handful of times, but just doesn't seem to work for me.

I'm male and play as female.

I love to write and draw stories, and most of my stories I use female protagonist.

With MMOs I do the same, love to create background stories and create females.

They are more beautiful and more fun to draw, simple as that. =X

I am female and play a male avatar. It started way back in a D&D campaign with friends. Playing a male kept another person(male playing male) from flirting with my character. Once I switched to male, the flirting changed into comradeship, so that was a relief. From that point I preferred playing male characters.

What made me decide to play a male avatar for this game was that I couldn't stand the feminized emotes. They looked silly and like nothing I would ever be caught doing. The male emotes resonated more with me. I think if I were to play a fem char, it'd be a fem roe. Most of their emotes are pretty neutral. As for race... This is the only game that I know of that allows catboys. I love cats. It was inevitable.

All of the non-Lalafell male races were too tall and/or rugged-looking for my tastes, so a tomboyish female Au Ra was the next best thing to me.

That and I just thought having a female as the hero of my XIV story would be more interesting considering how much more prevalent males are for the most part.

I did play male characters for physical roles and female characters for magical roles in the past. Until I found out that not a single MMO game (of which I tried) had any decent visuals (in my opinion) in the male looks. At least, not ones that are not limited to extreme content or item mall...neither of which I will do for looks alone.

So I always play female nowadays. I mean, if I spend my entire time playing by looking at the character, I prefer to like what I see. And even if the glamour itself is still often not to my taste, the general shape can at least partially make up for it unlike for male.

So yeah, reason is purely my sense of aesthetics.

My main is the same gender as i am irl... he's me... to a certain extent... I have an alt character that's female but she's a remnant from letting my ex wife play (why delete a level 50 character when you can glamour/name change the heartbreak away?)... and I've created a few other alts both male and female based on character ideas (scrappy but tiny miqote girl, mob boss type roe male )...but 99% of the time I'm on my main
