Making GIL via questing instead of selling

Hi, I'm recently 50 and I like the game in regards to the fighting mechanics, visuals, and sounds. However, what I'd like to do is quests in order to get more GIL as I'm saving up for a house as my new goal of progression.

Everyone tells me the way to make money is gathering and selling or crafting and selling but I'd really rather fight monsters and get rewarded by NPCs than sell logs on the market.

Am I out of luck in my desire to quest my way (even slowly, but not mind numbingly) toward the 1.x million GIL I'll need? I should point out that I've saved 500K GIL so far as I hit 50 a few days ago and that's by questing and selling a little bit before I began to grow weary of playing the market.

    Thanks

If you do all the side quests then maybe... but in addition to the land price you'll need a building permit and then all the furnishings... without crafting/gathering your best chance at making gil is to send your retainers out on ventures and sell what they bring back..

Have a look through your challenge log and see what targets you want to go for. A lot of them have gil rewards, and additionally you get a 10,000-gil bonus for every five targets you tick off, so there might be some non-combat challenges you can do quickly to reach extra targets. (Eg. go to the Gold Saucer, play a few minigames and you can tick off two challenges - which might mean an extra 10,000 gil bonus for a few minutes' work.

Also just keep going with the story and quests! They give you a good amount of reward money.

    Sort of...
While there really isn't a good way of making gil directly via quests (as most quests are limited anyway and the few repeatable quests that do exist aren't really good for making gil), if I rephrase your question to "is there a way of making gil without being a crafter or gatherer?" then your options are greatly enhanced.

Here are the options I see:

    1. Challenge log
Not a huge amount, but it's ok

    2. Selling quest REWARDS
By the time I got to 70, I already had about 3 mil. This was mostly from selling quest rewards from MSQ instead of using them to gear myself up. Instead I joined a hunt linkshell to use poetics to gear myself in augmented ironworks gear (which I used for 50-59), and augmented shire gear (which I used from 60-70, replacing only with dungeon drops and then eventually the job quest rewards).
I got a few more later on by going back and doing side quests on a second job with the same principle - if a quest offers up rewards, choose gear, sell it on MB.

    3. Making use of currencies
Whether it's by dungeons, potd, roulettes, hunts, you can get a variety of currencies.
There are so many ways to get currencies that I couldn't possibly list them all...but I would HIGHLY recommend joining a hunt linkshell - or at the very least doing the weekly hunting bills from the hunt board.

You can then use that to buy materials to sell on the Marketboard.
Or to buy unidentified soil/ore to exchange for gardening soil, to then sell that on the marketboard.
Or to buy gear, to turn that into GC, to then buy materials from the GC, to then sell that on the marketboard.

So don't let your currencies stay capped. All currencies can be turned into a marketboard-able item somehow. (except maybe beast tribe and wolf marks, but I'll be honest I just haven't bothered to figure out how to make money from them yet. It's probably still possible)
Allied seals? gear -> GC -> mat.
Centurio seals? Materia, or gear -> GC -> mat.
Poetics? gear -> GC -> mat or unidentified -> gardening.
Creation? gear -> GC -> mat or selling direct creation mats.
Mendacity? selling direct mats or buying gear to turn into GC when they enable it later.

    4. POTD
While I personally dislike potd, my husband didn't and a large portion of his gil came from being lucky to get rare items from the hoard sacs, which he then sold on the marketboard.

    5. Retainers
You retainers can get you items. If you like constant gil, figure out which mats they can directly gather for you to sell. If you want a gamble for better chances, the quick and long exploration ventures (the ones where you're not asking for a specific item) have chances to get rare minions and dyes.

    6. Eureka
Eureka = grade 5 combat materia.
Go to mutamix to try to turn it into grade 5/6 crafting/gathering materia (you will need a crafter high enough to unlock transmutation, but it's pretty low - like 19 or something).
Or just selling rewards from lockboxes. It's not a huge amount, but it does add up over time I suppose *shrug*.

    7. Maps
Treasure maps to try to get into the 2 special dungeons which can have some great rewards.

    Conclusion:
I think you're noticing the pattern. While it still relies on selling, there are a variety of ways to get things to sell without doing crafting or gathering. It won't be the hundreds of mils that those people have, but it can easily get you to 10+ mil and sustain you for food & pots once you get to endgame raiding.

And you can take this from someone who hasn't really done much crafting/gathering. A little here and there, but mostly for the purpose of leveling. And I pretty much stopped around level 15 and then moved on almost entirely to leveling via supply & provisioning (which I buy off the MB, I don't make/gather the items needed)and beast tribe quests, so I actually lose money from leveling them lol.
But doing the above sustains me being able to buy my way through S&P, buy all the things I need to do endgame raiding, and any other things I ever felt I needed.

Good ways to make money killing stuff.
    1. Role your daily duties as the in need job.
    2. Aetheryte tickets. While this does not make you gil, it saves you a bunch, stop paying 999 gil to teleport. These are purchased with Allied Seals.
In a similar maner, you can get a Grand Company version of this, which will teleport to the grand company for free.
    3. Complete hunts from the hunt board.
    4. Open world Hunts (A rank and S rank monsters), while the Gil rewards from these are not a great source of incoming, getting Allied Seals (2.x ARR) hunt rewards currency.
    5. Learn Desynthesis. While this does require you to level crafters to 30 to unlock the ability. That can be done with minimal effort and cost at an FC house just completing the crafting log. Levelling of Desynthesis once unlocked levels up completely separately from crafting levels.
    6. Teasure Maps, unfortnately unless you can gather, you will have to acquire maps from the market board. The payoff though can be amazing, as there are very rare glamour materials hidden in Aquopolis, The Lost Canals of Uznair and The Hidden Canals of Unzair. It pretty common to make 400k - 3mil for a night of treasure maps.

Thanks for all the insight. It does seem like a questing only desire will not get me a house in my lifetime. All those other things involving selling sound like they could be fun but if you (me) aren't a market savvy guy, it's like work. I will ponder my options some more, I got my fisher to 50 also and do get maps but they're all time worn currently, no leet maps at my level perhaps. I was offered money from my FC to help me buy a house but if I don't earn it, it's not fun for me.

    Thanks again.

Oooh, if youre 50 fishing you can send out your retainer for a fat cat minon if you get them to 50 too! Adorable, rare and pricy. If youre interested in desynth, the level 50 pvp belts can be armorer desynthed for darksteel nuggets and ingots.

Sorry to say, itll be hard to get much gil without getting to a higher level, other than through dumb luck.

You dont have to be market savvy, just market conscious. You do a quest that offers you a tank hat a melee hat or a ranged hat and you play caster? Look at the market(before you turn in the quest) and see which you could sell for the most. Take that reward, and sell it. You send a retainer on a quick venture and they bring back something you cant use? See what it sells for(checking sales history takes like 5 extra seconds and is very worth it in the long run), and list it if the price is good. You fish up maps sometimes, why not clear them and see if the rewards are valuable? The piesteskin map is only level 50, and theres still a couple really nice items you can only get from there. Also, all maps that you gather are timeworn(and maps that you find while clearing other maps are not) - its just the naming convention they went with. If clearing the maps isnt currently an option, sell them as you get them. Even if you only get 10k per map, you can fish one up every 18 hours and an extra 50-70k per week will get you closer to that house. And while i know you said gathering for gil wasnt your thing, but there are a few fish that sell for a fortune too. You dont need to know why people want a hq assassin betta(they can desyn it and maybe get a rare minion), just how much you can make for it.

One more option i didnt see anyone list. There are some crafting materials you get by clearing raids/trials, the first of which show up at level 50. Most people farm these by outleveling their prey and unsyncing the fights, but some of those mats still sell for a lot and this is another way you can fight to earn your money. Several of the level 50(and higher) dungeons also have crafting materials or minions hidden away in chests, and if you get them you can sell them off. The main problem with your original plan is that NPCs will never pay you what an item is actually worth. You need to go to players to get fair value for your work. If i were to craft the highest level suit of armor i could make to sell to an NPC they might give me 2k for it, while the materials to make it would cost dozens of times that. But a player who liked the look or needed a quick upgrade might pay me hundreds of thousands for it, possibly allowing me to turn a profit.

More thanks, I'm going to try some of the things you and others have suggested and see how hatefully slow or not it is to save up for a house. I'm one of those people that like to put their head down and grind and get rewarded, the selling adds a layer of abstraction I was trying to avoid but I'm going to try to keep an open mind.

Thanks again to all the nice people who have responded to my request for guidance.
