He's from a family of cartographers from an unnamed nation outside of Eorzea whose works were confiscated by Garlean forces shortly before a complete invasion was launched (bearing some guilt in the belief that his family's maps gave Garlemald the intelligence to launch a successful campaign). He managed to escape and flee, and ended up in the company of some bandits for a time where he learned basic archery in exchange for his skills as a cartographer. The group scattered when Garlean forces swept through the area, and he ended up in another nation that had a strange bar, where many bards from around the world had gathered to share their stories. Of course, the Legions arrived not soon after. The group initially had nothing to fear as non-combatants, up until the Garleans decided that their talents meant that there was a high risk of them performing espionage against Garlemald. The most respected among the group of bards started disappearing, and everyone else scattered to the winds once they realized what was happening.
One highly illegal boat ride to Limsa that crashed somewhere around Western Thanalan and a carriage bound for Gridania later (specifically the Archer's Guild), of course Garlemald had to come knocking on the door yet again.
