    Area Maps in 2.0

Just a suggestion I thought I'd post, but I think in 2.0 it would be better if the map system went back to the way it was in XI, as in, the maps are not unlocked automatically for you.

In XI, you could buy the basic city maps and maps of the immediate surrounding areas, but for maps of the other areas, as well as dungeons, you had to complete quests for them.

Since maps are being redesigned in 2.0, I'd like to have quests or something like it to acquire maps for the areas. I'm fine with city maps and immediate surrounding areas being obtainable by just buying them, but it would be more exciting and give the world a more mysterious feel if we didn't have the maps to EVERY area already. Gives us more of a desire to explore areas before we actually acquire the maps for them via whatever method.

    Anyone else agree?

Buying the maps was ok in XI.

However I really like the idea of unlocking parts of the map by exploration.

I'd prefer it this way. If IRL, I can take a pencil and a piece of paper and map an area in the game myself, not sure what would be stopping my character from doing this in-game.

    Just my 2 bits though.

EDIT: Saw the link after I posted, and to that I say: Woot! X)

Better yet, no maps at all. That way some fan site can charge us a subscription fee to see some crude MS Paint abomination just to get a sense of where we're going.

I would like to see the maps and areas discovered, but that's just my personal opinion.

I'm a little on the fence with this one, yes not having the maps helps exploration, but there will always be zones like Fei Yin on FFXI which I never got the map for and always got hopelessly lost in, mind that is part of the game, so what the hell, lets make it like this, give us no maps, in 2.0, whats more fun than accidentally running into lvl 90 mobs because you one wrong turn

I would like to see some sort of challenge associated with getting a map. It would be fun if you had to do a short quest or open a coffer for a map. Perhaps it could be a reward for doing a certain amount of levs in the area, or gc quests, or other methods of 'earning' it. It would just be another thing for people to spend the time doing.

Although I do think the whole 'revealed as you explore' method is cool, it would be INCREDIBLY frustrating for certain zones... such as the Black Shroud, or areas with extreme changes in elevation... such as Thanalan. Let's say you have a quest to do, haven't explored the area, but clicking 'map' in your journal will still take you to the 'exact' location. Even if you know that exact location on your map, it might take you FOREVER to find a path there.

But... they might just keep it 'as is'. Why fix what's not broken? Although some of us would like to see this changed, it's definitely on the back burner while they've got bigger fish to fry.
