PvP - Will you do it? And how to do it.

I read somewhere that PvP is scheduled for 2.0 (a long while 'till we can see that, I know). Will you engage in the pewpew? And how do you want pewpew to be like?

I'm coming from some serious PvP-MMO background, favouring the ones demanding Teamwork, Optimism, Accuracy, Skill and Tenacity. While it's nice and relaxing with only PvE, (bc srsly this game is purty beyond belief) I know that I'll be missing that special mechanic once I've explored Eorzea properly. Around that time, I am going to want to start bash your heads in, mock your noobiness, tell you to L2P, and become an elitist prick, feeding off the tears of carebears whining over how I cheated being more skilled than them. I will now apologize in beforehand PvP actually arrives for my future behaviour.

Now, how I want it to look... I want there to be high-risk, and lossless Pew. I want it to be balanced. I want it to pay off. I was thinking of having two "leagues" in which it plays out. One with just leve-like rewards. Some gils, some kewl vanilla gear. Maybe a hat. Or some pants.
Then there's a higher tier, in which you actually lose something. Maybe lose gil if your team dies that's awarded the winning team? And the loot it shall be epic. I was thinking it might been an interesting idea if there was one special kind of armour set that can only be held by the winning team of the server (think Maat's gear from FFXI kind of powerful, except without the ugly). If the people awarded the armour doesn't show up to protect their honour for the next final, they lose the gear. If they lose the final in a fight however, they still lose it. To the new winner. Hurray~

Rules: Every job is spawned into an "instance" dressed in default PvP gear, tailoured only for that activity. Balance is a must in these things, and ultimately, a Tank, DD, Nuker and Healer should all be meant to have the same opportunities to shine on the battlefield. For the lesser league, same rule about PvP gear. But you only pay a small fee to enter (or you dont! nothing final!), and you walk away with rewards based on general smashing of heads. Some reputation to turn in for those kewl hats. Or those pants.

I know PvP isn't actually this game's big "seller". I mean, rarely fantasy games of this magnitude actually have that. I also am aware it can create some... Tension, between players. We do have that with normal raids and dungeoun runs too already, and even in XP parties, but still.

I'm just making the thread mostly to see if there's some kindred spirits for this kind of high-risk, but also fun based, fighting among men/cats/lalafels/bears.

I dunno. I kinda thought my days of killing fellows in FF in FF2 and FF4.

Where Shadowbane and Darkfall was where hardcore PvP, loot all, any time, anywhere, friendly fire going on.

With the current setup, I don't foresee a balanced PvP option fighting other players. Unless there's some blend of PvE and PvP in the same "arena".

Edit: Except Shadowbane til' Level 20. I think you were safe if you opted to milk the staying island.

I'm not sure what your rules mean specifically. It seems to exclude gear you personally own, which I'm not sure about. Then again, I haven't done much PvP in MMOs.

    Also,
"Teamwork, Optimism, Accuracy, Skill and Tenacity" = TOAST

PvP is something I've very much so taken interest in for this game. I'm quite competitive and a quick thinker. If in some way it is implemented to where teamwork is sought after overall then that would make it even better. Not to mention the competition between friends.

I'd like a story prior to being able to participate as well. As in the reasoning behind it all and how we're involved.. with involvement being completely optional of course.

Aye. The whole idea would be for the specific gear to balance the classes/jobs for the PvP instances, without having to disturb the world we know in PvE. Is a THM too squishy and do just too much damage in PvP? Buff and nerf through PvP gear. Is the archer stun-binding people all over the place just gamebreaking? Adjust it through the gear, etc.
The key to competetive PvP in MMO's is "balance" and "tactics". It's not a tactic to bring 8 mages to instakill all with fire-fira-firaga. That's gamebreaking, for example. Classes should bring a strength and weakness to the battlefield, and predetermined strategy and tactics should pay off in this regard, imo.

That's precisely something I'd hump a leg at. I liked how they involved a whole story around Ballista in FFXI. Unfortunately, I didn't think the story was very good, but still. @_@

I hope we can eventually have open world PvP. Only for those that flag themselves as PvP.
That way, people that enjoy PvP can do it to their heart's content while other that are more into PvE can continue their daily activities.
I've played MMO with that option and it worked extremely well. Also, another rule that could be added: only people from different Grand Company can PvP in the open like that. People from the same Grand Company have to do so in tournaments.

LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.
    (Marvelous economics IQ test!)

Now we're talking RvR too. You just earned yourself a like-button! <3

Yoshi-p was a former DAoC player, I just hope that he will bring something similar to the glorious DAoC RvR.

    3 factions.
24/7 war for territory control (tower / castle + relics)
Separated from PvE area so whoever don't like RvR can still enjoy PvE in "peace"

Will do it for sure. PvP is going to mark very clear lines between good players, bad players, and PvE carebear players.

Will do it for sure, I enjoy competing against others.

I don't care what form it takes. I even enjoyed Ballista (competing in Ballista Royale is one my fondest FFXI memories).
