    World map?

I was wondering if anyone has put together a 'world map' by assembling the various area maps into a complete picture? The current stylised map isn't that helpful for seeing where things are located, and the regional maps don't show the actual positioning of the areas, but are split apart for visibility.

I also thought it should be possible to map out the relative location of places by using the teleport fees as a guide. (Having done a quick test by mapping the four capital cities, it seems that the fee is a consistent rate of "[distance unit] + 100" gil. So if that holds true for everything, it would be possible to triangulate where all the other cities are located.)

I was going to try doing it myself, but firstly I wanted to check if it's already been done, and also I know that I'm likely to get halfway through and then not get around to the rest of it.

Thankyou for the link. That exact address is blocked, but this is the page version which might work better, and the article for Eorzea also has a higher-resolution version of the Eorzea-only map, though sadly still not clear enough to read the smaller writing.

That said, it's not what I was after, as it's the stylised map we get in the game (and as I mentioned in my first post). It's fine for an overview but it's not a complete map - I want to see where all the towns are located, and how it all fits together.

A question from the existing world map though: I noticed that Hingashi is labeled (if I'm reading the letters right) "Koshu" so I'm assuming that they changed it in translation for some reason. Does anyone know why they did that?

And what are the smaller crests under the city-state crests in the lower-left corner?

Hmm, best I could come up with on a quick search was this, though it appears to be strictly ARR based, with nothing for HW or SB. This at least an example of the type of map you're looking for?

That's what I was thinking of, yes, though trying to assemble it properly to scale and not 'split apart'.

Some starting points I was thinking of:
    • Ul'dah will fit neatly into the curve of Central Thanalan with the two gates lined up, then scale Western Thanalan to connect with paths into Ul'dah and Central
    • Gridania's inn and airship landing are visible across the lake in Central Shroud so those maps can be lined up. (Although oddly the lake isn't drawn with the same shape on both maps.)
    • Several of the La Noscea maps show an outline of the coast and the location of Limsa
    • Should be able to trace rivers across multiple maps?
    • Depending on how accurate the teleport fee distances are (ie. whether they're based on a true scaled map or not) it would be possible to get the exact size/placement of regions with two aetheryte locations.

It's not quite as simple as sticking each map next to the entrance/exit to the next area, because some seem to have distance between them. Sometimes you can see the same area from both sides of an area break line, sometimes you can see a path that you 'warp' to the other end of (eg. Limsa's bridges to field areas), sometimes you can't see where you've come from.

The issue is that most maps don't connect. There is a varying space that we as players just pass through that isn't mapped.

The specific zone maps don't account for the area traversed between zonelines, and the general "stylized" map of Eorzea as a whole leaves this vague likely due to the way they designed the game into zones rather than a seamless world.

Any completely contiguous, to-scale map of Eorzea is going to be a loose interpretation at best, because the walkable areas of Eorzea we have access to technically leave large tracks of terrain completely unaccounted for, and not necessarily just the implied paths between the zonelines but also the sheer wilderness on the other side of each zone's "walls".

To answer your question though, I would assume an artistic interpretation of to-scale cartography centered on the world of FFXIV is probably an uncommon bit of art, if not one no one's bothered to complete at all or at least share with the community at large.

I wish you luck and look forward to anything you decide to share!

Koshu is one of the three islands that make up Hingashi.

Koshu is written in the same font size as Othard, Aldenard, etc. so on second thought (purely based on reading the map) I would assume that's the region name for that island chain. There aren't any similar labels for other islands so it looks like it's meant to be the name for all of them.

Meanwhile the smaller font used for country names says [something that's not 'Hingashi' but I can't make it out on the web-version map] but has a pinned label 'Hingashi' over it in-game.

Part of me still wishes the ARR zones will be sewn together in a close/distant/dystopian future. There's no PS3 holding the old zones back so.. hint hint.
