Can you also do what I said earlier?
Run event viewer, click on custom view, then administrative events. Find the one referring to FFXIV and copy and paste what it says in here.
Sometimes in the event viewer it tells of a file that it ran into an issue with and all you have to do is replace it.

Sounds like an infinite loop somewhere inside the kernel :/
The event viewer should give more information about it but it will probably end in a windows reinstall. Just replacing a faulty dll might fix this, but it's nearly impossible to find out what's broken if the game can't even be closed.

Here is what the event viewer said:

The program ffxivgame.exe version 1.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

Ok, so, I did some more troubleshooting today and I think I pretty much figured out what is causing the problem. When I first installed and started playing FFXIV I was using a Logitech USB controller, when I transported my computer I started using an XBOX 360 controller. Today, I altered some of the graphics settings while my brother had the controller, and just gave the game a go. It ran perfectly fine with no crashes. I turned the graphics back to what I had originally, and again, no crashes. I plug in the Xbox controller and use the default gamepad settings in the config and start the game up. And you guessed it, it crashes during battle just as it did before!

What exactly does this mean? Do I need to alter my gamepad settings? The XBOX controller works fine on other games.

P.S!!!! Also when I disconnect the controller after the game crashes, it closes!! What the heck!

Ok, last and final post because I found out what was causing it. Enabling the vibration on the gamepad was causing my game to crash... ! What a wild goose chase....

Thank you everyone for offering your assistance with this silly problem!

I'm glad it worked out in the end. It's a bit scary what kind of settings can cause each of our games to crash.

(i.e. for me it's changing to any custom font, going to inventory, and navigating to the crystal pane will cause consistent crash, but only on that one computer).
