Hello I've only been playing the game for a few months now and have got a red mage to 70 but I'm not really feeling the class. Is Sam a better class? or should I just stick with my red mage?

That greatly depends on what your are looking for from a class. What's fun to you?
Do you want to be in melee range? Do you prefer playing at a distance from your target?
Do you want to have to manage multiple things at a time, just click lots of buttons fast, or both?
Here's a quick rundown on the DPS classes and what they have to offer. Pick the one that suits you!
BLM: High Magical DPS with low party support.
RDM: Low Magical DPS with medium party support
SMN: High Magical DPS with medium party support
BRD: Low Ranged DPS with massive party support
MCN: Medium Ranged DPS with high party support
SAM: High Melee DPS with no party support
MNK: High Melee DPS with low party support
DRG: Medium Melee DPS with medium party support
NIN: Low Melee DPS with high party support
So basically you just need to answer 2 questions: Do you want to do massive DPS, or do you want to help make your party stronger? Do you want to be ranged, melee, or magic?
High DPS - go SAM, MNK, or BLM
High Party Support - go BRD, NIN, or RDM
Middle Ground - go DRG, SMN, or MCN

Red Mage in my opinion is an inherently boring job; largely I think because no matter how much flashier it is, it plays like a level 60 archer (not bard, archer), you sort of just mindlessly plink out spells. Samurai is much more fun, but as of right now before any balance adjustments, it's a very unrewarding job since the difference between optimizing like crazy and just building up to your big hit repeatedly is REALLY not that big. If you like Red Mage's nonlinear rotation and mobility, consider Bard, which has great party support and has a crapton going on at once.

@ Tex, i would think Smn has high magical dps and medium support.
Red Mage brings lower dps and if we are talking end game (savage and such) also low support
I definitely agree on the SMN change and have edited my post to reflect it. As far as the RDM party support, it is great for end game progression, but definitely falls off once people understand mechanics. I put it as medium just because I was trying to take both of those things into account.

Fair enough![]()

The problem with rdm is that they gameplay doesnt really change much from from 60 onward. You get a few utility abikities like Raise and you get Impact, which honestly just feels like a tacked on ability to force you to press a different button each rotation. Verholy and Verflare are really the only things that change up gameplay at all and all that involves in really managing your bars.
Samurai, on the other hand, is really basic until 62. Getting Kenki Mastery 2 and Shinten are a decently big change to gameplay, especially after you get Hagakure and you're spamming Shinten in between most of your weapon skills. It flows really qeel and feels fun and satisfying to me. Has some layers of complexity without getting stupid.
The icing on the cake is learning how to use Yaten to jump out of AoE, hitting an Enhanced Enpi and quickly dashing back in to continue your attack. If only Enpi didn't interrupt combos.
