Small correction. They died in Copperbell Mines. Another thinly veiled comment about people rushing in without thinking.

You see other adventurers at the beginning of Wanderer's Palace, and then again in the Endless Rise getting attacked by tonberry stalkers. (Not sure if it's meant to be the same people both times, or if there are multiple parties, but you meet the one couple afterwards in the hard mode unlock quest.)

You encounter tomb raiders in Qarn hard mode, and they're the ones who set off the traps and endangered the researchers you were sent in to find.

There are also adventurers out in the field at Mor Dhona, particularly as FATE NPCs fighting monsters.

It seems to me that a lot of "adventurer's jobs" are more the stuff we do in the overworld - defeat monsters that are a danger to villagers, fulfil guildleve requests, do odd jobs and deliveries for some extra gil and possibly food. We've just been drawn into this bigger conflict that's far above and beyond what the average adventurer would (or could) be doing.

To me it's just sad that we haven't really seen them in the newer areas. Even if they're an npc like the carbuncles where they pop up do their thing and then just vanish until next time. Like could you imagine a not as bright adventurer or a selfish one had done the quest dealing with the merchant that wanted to set up shop on the Steppe? They could have gotten that guy dead or worse. This makes me want more postmoogle quests where maybe we do get a glimpse to see how it is for someone who started out like us but isn't us in one.

The idea of "Adventurers" started out as an Eorzean idea. There's not a lot of good reasons for the Far East to be familiar with Adventurers as a career title until we show up there.

"Adventurers" was Eorzea's way of dealing with all the people they recruited to fight against the XIVth Legion when it took over Gyr Abania the first time. Only, the XIVth Legion didn't try to take over the rest of Eorzea and built Balasaur's Wall which left Eorzea with a huge army and no enemy to fight with it. Rather then fight a hopeless war, the different city states created Adventurer's Guilds that are basically freelance mercenary post that hired the people who were recruited to fight. The city-state have jurisdiction over the Adventurer's Guilds. So basically... Adventurers are what Eorzea came up with to combat ex-army members getting board and resorting to illegal activities to keep themselves employed. Instead of trying to fight against the idea of mercenaries, the city-states institutionalized it.

All that happened around... 20 years before ARR starts. By now it's grown to be a legitimate career, if a (very) risky one.

If you chat with that one guy in the Mol encampment (one of the 'what is this place/what do you do here' NPCs), he tells you he used to be an adventurer. (at least I think it's a guy - I did not look very closely)

The question is...where do the NPC Xaela adventurers adventure?

Good Question. There's only four Au Ra npcs that I know of and one is your enemy in the whm 50-60 quest line. That left their respective homes I mean. The drk trainer, and then a Raen ninja princess and her bodyguard are the other three. Like on the Steppe they know of the outside world, but most don't seem to want to leave it. There seems to be a migration of both Raen and Xaela that we don't know much about.

There is also Yugiri, though, she's not from the Steppe as I recall. At least not directly. There's also the one who is involved with the Alexander storyline. Not sure if she hails from the Steppe or not though, as I've yet to run any of those instances to further that story.

We...Know where Yugiri is from, though. We met her parents...

The reasons we see Au Ra in Eorzea vary.

Sidurgu from the Dark Knight quests reveal that he and his tribe were from somewhere in Othard. They migrated to Eorzea when he was a child to escape some kind of fighting that was more then the norm (probably the Garlean Invasion). Unfortunately, they ended up in Ishgard where they were thought to be dragons... Alaqa from the White Mage quests has a similar backstory, although in her case, she actively spreads Taint to create zombies.

Yuki is a Hingan Ninja princess who is searching for her clan's treasures. The treasures were stolen from the clan and once she finds them, she heads back to Hingashi. Yugri specifically came to Eorzea to find a place for the Domans to go. Once Doma is liberated they all go back to Doma.

Yugiri is a Raen (light-scaled) Au Ra though, and only the Xaela (dark-scaled) Au Ra are from the Steppe.

The lorebook says that the Raen have "fully assimilated to the cultures of Doma and Hingashi" but it's possible they originated in the undersea kingdom that we visit in the Shisui questline.

Meanwhile if I remember correctly, Mide from the Alexander quests was from the Hotgo tribe? The lorebook has a list of Xaela tribes and says that the Hotgo were "recently massacred by the Dotharl [and] the only members surviving are those who left the tribe to travel on their own and were not present during the killing". That could be a vague reference to Mide and her companions and that only they survived, but it's also possible that there are others and it's normal for some tribe members to leave and travel elsewhere.

There are a couple of other Au Ra around elsewhere in Eorzea. From memory, there's one at the Wolves' Den pier, and in Idyllshire there's Seika (a Raen) at the gear augmentation stall and Adkiragh (who insists he is specifically definitely not an Adarkim Xaela) in the same building as Zhloe Aliapoh.
