In the early parts of the game there *are* a lot of creatures that don't attack you on sight. It's one of the things that annoys me about the expansions - everything now wants to kill you, no exceptions but sprites.

Dialogue mentions that dodos are kept as domesticated birds, chickens exist (though we don't seem to see them much, there's Enkidu and you can buy chicken eggs), aldgoats and buffalo are apparently kept for milk, and the Red Rooster Stead also has sheep.

Dogs definitely exist, going from the last Heavensturn event.

There was also a passing mention in the lorebook of someone having a pet cat, but I can't find it now.

Anyway, the game could definitely do with more 'NPC animals' around.

Could be (but I myself never saw one) but the ARR were a bit better anyway, since they had passive animals. Now its just: well this little bug also wants to kill you. Its getting less believable.

The ruby sea is really depressing, especially after the great scene in the benchmark trailer. Now barely any fish swim there and it just feels so liveless.

Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

That's something that annoyed me a lot. I was actually looking forward to the swimming and underwater stuff but then there's barley fish and tbh not much to do.

They hyped that underwater stuff up so much before SB launch in all those streams and such and now it's been months I've been underwater ... there's just not anything to do aside from the very few MSQ you had to do in there.

I'm just standing in one of the major cities (apart from Limsa Lominsa, I avoid that RP plaughed location), and just spam my roulette. The only time I'll go out again is when they release the new expansion and that will just be untill lvl cap and then just stand there spamming roulettes again.

I'd rather have them to spend more time on you know content that matters? (for me at least I guess).

Oh and you know ... #serverlimitations.
One of the reasons I play FF over something like WoW is the fact they do care about the game environmental detail and atmosphere, night, day, weather and all that. I'd rather they added more instead of an extra dungeon for the roulette grind. That's just me though, different people enjoy different things.

That said, even WoW is packed with critters and wildlife, the server limitation excuse for absolutely any interesting change or QoL in the game gets a bit lame when most other MMO's on the market manage these things fine.

And this has been the case since 2004. I see no reason why XIV shouldn't have this.

I think it would really help with some of the 'boring' zones too like The Fringes, it's pretty dull in regards to textures, but it makes sense lore-wise that'd it's pretty desolate, but there would still be critters and fauna, like snakes, scoprions, etc

Hell, I'd love to see NPCs that move around some, too, rather than standing still 24/7. It's always unnerving to go to a city in the dead of Eorzean night and see it just as populated as it is during the day. I realize for quest-specific NPCs this might not be worth the effort, but can't we see the non-critical ones wandering around in accordance with the clock?

Edit / Addition: 5 gil says that if SE ever introduces flora and fauna packs, they're classified as 'bonus content' and sold on the Mog Station next to the HD texture packs people keep asking for.
