Indeed, it's all about advertisement. Look at Minecraft, it was plastered everywhere on 4 chan and youtube, if it was just confined to www.minecraft.net and a random banner or ad or two (which most people block ads these days) you can guarantee it wouldn't have done as well as it did.

Advertising is strong, especially to younger people and people who absolutely love silly stuff like Mr T promoting a game he doesn't even play.

Good advertisement campaign can make any redneck in America and cellardweller in Europe buy anything that looks colourful and has chicks to talk to.
I mean it, FF series has some standards, WoW is entertainment provided to the mass... so no wonder millions of people play it... Just like millions of people watch garbage like Celebrity Big Brother and American Idol...

    Flame away!
    Yup.

Try Besaid if retrying Selbina doesn't work for you; good luck with whatever you choose though.

Rabanastre and Selbina are both fine servers.

I'd steer clear of any server that starts with an 'f' though.

(ok I'm mostly joking about that)

All it really comes down to is the fact that 15 million people felt WoW was worth their time and money where 500,000 to 750,000 -- 5% of WoW's size -- felt the same for XI.

I'm not trying to discredit XI. I personally don't like WoW. I loved CoP XI. I'm just not under the delusion that old school XI design would keep the servers online for very long. I'd like to play this game for a while.
The problem with FFXI was SE did not market it, personnaly I didnt know FFXI was around until I was at a friends house and he was playing it, there were no adverts in the UK whereas WoW gets hours of TV advertising, the main way to get people to buy a product is to let people know its there.

WoW even gets celebraties to help market it, remember Mr. T and his mohawk grenades? Which helps marketing alot.

To know FFXI even existed you needed to be researching MMOs or reading up on all the FF news, if FFXI peaked at over 5 million subs you would know people played it and didnt think it deserved the money, but because it peaked at 750k I can say confidently that people just did not know it was around.

So please SE market ffxiv v2.0 well and world wide, make sure it gets on TV if possible, to get people who like MMOs but don't keep upto date on news to play.

Btw I didnt even think "Where's FFXI" when they jumped from FFX to FFXII

The gist of what you wrote boils down to was "Of course WoW was popular, it was made to be popular."

    What a shocking concept.

What you're expecting is for SE to reverse their position on what XIV is meant to be and create a game for a niche market. They made that game 10 years ago and still is online.

And advertising will only get people in the door. It takes fun and worth while content to keep them from leaving.

But god forbid SE ever actually advertised one of their products. If they intentionally avoid doing something just because Blizzard did it they'll end up with a crappy game that barely anyone knows about -- kind of like Final Fantasy XIV circa September 2010.

Success is success, no matter how anyone tries to spin it. WoW may be the American Idol of MMOs, but in the end both products are fulfilling their purpose; to make their creators money.

Companies need to adapt to changing markets and evolve if they expect to survive. Splurging on a product then reducing it to a niche market that would never recoup initial investments just makes no sense.

    XIV needs mass appeal.

In which city are you now? Try to move to Ul'dah as soon as you can manage, if you are not there now, because the community has tacitly chosen this city as the main hub of the game in its current state. Limsa or Griddy will only give you limited opportunities to be social, or to trade. But Ul'dah is bustling with activity 24/7.

Oh yeah baby, we saw those standards last year when XIV launched, its also has been a running thing in the FF series (look @ XIII, XIII-2)

After reading your post and "entertainment provided to the mass, no wonder everyone played it" wich to you is a bad thing, I can only think of white shiny knights.

To OP, Selbina, Besaid and Cornelia are considered high pop servers. As many other players posted, if you are lucky enough you will find a good LS that will give you alot of fun times.

Feel free to check Kweh LS on Cornelia
