Do we need both a class and job system?

yes

Why not just ditch classes and have the job system like FFXI.

Because it's FF XIV. The FF XI job system would not work with the armory system. It would be like changing the materia system from FF VII to the job system from FF III.

I honestly don't see the need or the attraction to have both.

One is for solo play with all skills you have learned, the other is for specialized roles in a party
