Mod users in FFXIV are getting out of control

From a legal point of view, the game launcher has to do this to ensure the game is up to date, so no. What would be a privacy violation would be damaging the machine, or sending data from the user's machine without their consent, and you've already consented to to this by agreeing to the ToS. Just because you break the ToS doesn't mean it doesn't still apply. Let me point to an example of a serious screwup, look up PSO2's horrible screwup that bricked machines. One has to ask what the patcher did to brick a machine.

Websites can't arbitrarily send files from your PC to other sites, but when you agree to use FB, Twitter, Tumblr, GooglePlus, etc, you also agree to not hold them liable for any information they harvest from your activities due to their tracking beacons. This site (forum.square-enix.com) has the google analytics beacon on it, so if you use any google services, you're being tracked.

Anyone going "it's only pixels", or somehow can't see the problem. The problem is harassment. The game also provides a solution for this called "report harassment". That might ultimately do nothing to the player, but if that player decides to do some kind of revenge-porn by posting it somewhere outside the game to harass the player, then the problem goes outside the realm of what SE has control over and into DMCA's. At that point SE is still legally the copyright owner of the assets, of which I think SE has better things to do than try to shut down mod sites.

SE likely won't do anything until players start giving themselves cash shop items via mods. So please don't poke the bear. If people are modding, don't admit to it, don't discuss where to find mods, and don't post screenshots in public spaces of modded game clients.

While the tells this OP has allegedly received are completely uncalled for, what you do in this scenario is: blacklist, report, and move on. You don’t start a crusade against everyone who mods just because a few people are being twats about it. And you certainly don’t try to equate it with actual privacy violations such as someone posting a naked picture of you in real life on the internet; you are not your toon.

I'm not arguing that what should happen is reporting and blacklisting those who are sending those tells, or that the crusade against mods is going too far, nor that it's not equal to someone posting "revenge porn"(as a lot of the sharing of intimate photos of one's ex partner is often referred to in the media). The parts I'm disputing are the people that are dismissing the harassment side of it because it’s “just pixels, get over it”. Bullying/harassment is still bullying/harassment, no matter how you slice it.

The texture mods are only visible to those who apply them and they are not server wide. It's a local client only texture modification nobody else can see except the person who applied them. So how in the 7 hells are you offended by this I really don't know.
I don't see you complaining about DPS parsers like ACT which IS against the ToS. A tool that ONLY PC users can use for their advantage but NOT PS4 users.
How in Eorzea are you complain about something that's not visible to you in any way unless you go those specific sites and feast your eyes. Thing that you already did from what you say.
Why do you even care what someone else does to his local machine that doesn't give unfair gameplay advantage (hacks) or it doesn't modify anything server wide (hack again).
You sound like a guy who just enjoyed some adult videos on an adult website then comes back to preach against adult videos once he is done with them.
If mods are not allowed so do DPS parsers like ACT period.

And BTW naked/nude photos of FFXIV characters existed looong ago on places like Tumblr for some years now. It's called photoshop.

Someone had a link in their ffxiv description linking to an outside page of some sort with nude mods.
And something about harassing someone else with them...

Forgot to respond to this: I believe the situation you are thinking of, was of a player on one of the JP servers. They had a link to their Twitter in their Search Info in-game, which had pictures of their character in revealing outfits and “lewd”/“questionable” positions (the ones I saw were more awkward camera angles—think up-skirts). I’m assuming someone went to their profile, got upset about it, reported them, and then a GM contacted them in-game. As far as I am aware, they never harassed anyone with lewd screenshots of their characters; their Twitter was primarily composed of pictures of their own character.

I believe where people are dismssing the complaints are not with regards to the /tells, but with regards to comments like this from the OP:

I feel like I am being seen nude without consent and I do not appreciate that!

I feel violated and unable to wear some of my favorite outfits in public anymore knowing that they show off my parts.

Feels like my peers around me have X-Ray eyes and are always starring at my chest.

Secondly, to all those saying it's not harassment and it's just pixels. Why would it be any different if someone posted an irl nude of me on their tumblr? Because it's digital it's suddenly acceptable and I should just get over it? Some of us do like to treat our characters as extensions of ourselves.

2. Their character is not them.
3. They seem to think it’s even remotely comparable to compare pictures of a nude, virtual characters to real nude pictures of themselves online.

These are all aside from the fact that they want to punish the majority of modders just because a few are acting like two-year-olds. The three I listed are the reasons why I disagree with the OP. They are not their character, and their character is not them. I find it silly they way that they are talking as such. Aside from the fact that I have seen no definitive proof yet that they have actually received harassing messages depicting their character in naked and/or compromising positions—the only things I have seen are the screenshots of that one tell, and their word that people are supposedly contacting them in-game to discuss about this thread (the only other post that could have had any “evidence” of “wrong-doing” or “ill-will” was deleted by them, so it probably didn’t have much “evidence” to begin with); quite frankly, it’s hard to take them at their word when they keep deleting posts and are posting from multiple accounts—I can understand the need for the latter if they desire privacy, but if you have a legitimate concern, why are you deleting every other post you make?

To start telling everyone “to be careful” about something that, quite frankly, is not a common occurrence equates to little more than fear-mongering, in my opinion. When you approach a topic with views like the OP has, you are going to be met with resistence.

I don’t entirely agree with the OP myself, since honestly, it’s no skin off my back if someone decides to use a mod and see my character naked…it honestly has no affect on me. The only way I would actually bring it up, to GMs(since honestly, 99.999999999~% of mods are for personal enjoyment of the game), is when they start harassing me over something. At that point, blacklist and wash my hands.

I will agree that the lack of concrete evidence(yes the one I quoted earlier can be seen as harassment, or someone who saw this thread and decided to poke fun – which again, could be seen as harassment), and the deleting of posts doesn’t provide them much credibility.

Unfortunately, the way the world works a good 80% of the time, fear mongering tends to get the most(not always best) results.
