Mod users in FFXIV are getting out of control

Harassment should be dealt with in accordance with the general Terms of Service. I agree.

Going after a whole community won't accomplish anything. I'm not even a part of it, but most SS I've seen happen inside modders' own four walls, with no one present.
The rest, even if others are around, doesn't do anything at all. To be able to get nudes or whatever, you need to have certain pre-requisites. Like I mentioned, no gear equipped...

I didn’t say anything about going after an entire community though. I said that it won’t do any good to go up against the community if the problem is a few players connected to the op harassing them. Even if you took the mod away, those players would find other ways if they really wanted to continue.

I’d be interested to know what exactly the op is experiencing. If he/she is being harassed by a specific player or group of players on his/her server who happen to use this mod as one of their tools of harassment, then the op has every right to feel uncomfortable, but it isn’t something that can be addressed by the modding community or by SE taking action against them.

(Though this could just be how I read your post. If you’re agreeing with me on that part, then yes - it makes no sense at all to blame people who aren’t involved. I’m very modest myself as far as how my character is displayed on my screen, and I don’t pay these mods much attention at all. I’m not sure why anyone would get so defensive over a thing they don’t have to see if they don’t want to.

Oh I was talking about Fhaerron that dude really got bothered by someone having an opinion to the point that he thinks the OP needs to seek help and not the ppl busting to pixels on a tv/monitor. I think it's gross and that's my opinion. I mean Lalas look like kids so it's so weird ppl could picture them like that. I play the game because I enjoy playing video games and content not to figure ways on how to make my character sexually attractive.

So basically, the point of my post was people play RPGs tend to be people who like customization; be that class skills or aesthetics. It just so happens that FFXIV is restrictive in regards to both of those things; that's where mods come in and allow player expression beyond the game's base boundaries.

As far as customization, people also tend to want their characters to look good. And for a lot of people, good means sexually attractive.

They should not use it to take pictures of other people's characters to upload naked, and they shouldn't approach people harassing them by something they were not aware. Believe it or not, I can relate to that - I'm female and I started this game about 5 years ago playing a male character. Part of the reason to pick a male instead of a female was to avoid getting weird messages and being hit on. And I've been getting at least a few creepy messages since I switched to a FemRoe about 3 years ago. It sucks, it really does.

...when people are doing it to/with our people. Dressing (and moding) their own game and character in that way is, frankly, their buisness. As long as they mind theirs (aka: not uploading harrassing/naked pictures of peoples characters without their consent or sending inappropriate messages), everyone else should mind their own aswell. No need to throw a whole bunch of people under the bus when there is a way to deal with the problem: Report any form of harrassment and have the GMs deal with it.

What you're doing here might be with the right intention, but with an aweful approach. Because you're confusing two things: Those mods and people who abuse them.
Now you're lumping harrassment of a whole different type into aswell - without even knowing wether or not the person who sent weird messages to your nephew was using any mods or not. Believe me: those texts are their own story and one that should be reported, no doubt about that. They are their own problem though and they will most likely continue to be, even if you take away the option for everyone to alter the appearance of their game on their own computer. Even if its just something like changing a hairstyle.

The solution to your problem is to report anyone who is harrassing you (in some cases, as much as it pains me to say that: grow a thicker skin - while this form of harrassment shouldnt be tolerated, you should also not let it get to you) - not to ban mods. Because dont fool yourself: If SE does that, they most likely wont be selective about it. It would mean to take a lot of most likely great stuff away from people who enjoy it, while gaining little regarding the matters you're concerned about.

The issue I see with this post is that you’re acting like this is some common occurrence that people just take screenshots of other individuals’ characters in the nude and start harassing them with said screens—in the case of the OP, this hasn’t even been proven to be true; they made no mention of (prior to this thread) even being harassed by such things. Instead, it sounded like they heard about mods, dived into the Discord for them, got scared that they or other people are going to suddenly be targeted by a bunch of predators, and started a crusade (much like how the individual on Tumblr started theirs, but then again, it is Tumblr). I asked them if this had ever happened to them (and I believe a few others did as well), and they have never answered.

Modders mod for the sake of their own characters, not to see other characters naked. There are obviously skeevy/shady individuals in every community (note how I said every community, not just the modding community), so you deal with them as appropriate: report them, blacklist them, and then move on. You speak of perverts, but perverts don’t have to mod to still be perverts. Just saying.

It's amazing how vivid opinions people have about avatars. Whether it's for or against them. Some people think avatars are throw-away valueless constructs and others feel like they're a part of their personality.

Telling someone “you are not your character, and they are not you” isn’t the same as acting like your avatar is just a throwaway, valueless construct. My character is extremely dear to me, but I am cognizant enough to realize that she and I are not the same, and thereby an image of her naked is most definitely not the same as an image of myself naked (unless I suddenly became a Warrior of Light/Slayer of Eikons with cat ears and a tail overnight—in which case, ugh, I’m far to lazy for this kind of life).

And the bigger the fire gets--the more Square-Enix will notice it. And they'll nuke the modding community to put that fire out. So can we try to agree and move on?

The only way SE could actually identify modders if is they install a client-side detector that can detect when game files are read/modified. This would also get rid of ACT and ReShade, and, at that point, SE would be hurting their bottom line.

You are right. People do enjoy games differently which is why they even added the little RP symbol thing that you can have right next to your name if you are into that kind of thing. Even then ppl should still get consent since I'm sure just because ppl like to Rp it doesn't mean they like to ERP. Everyone can enjoy the game doing weird things or not. Just simply don't include everyone in what you like and don't bother ppl. It's that simple, we all have to pay to play anyway so we get to complain or give our opinion about it if we don't agree with something. The long hair mod sounds great but that whole naked mess does not.

Well his character is not even half naked nor does he have an RP symbol over his head. He was minding his own business doing story quests and that happened. He even felt the need to go from a female to a male character just because of it. It sucks that that's the attitude of this community... "well you play an online game so you are subject to get harassed because you asked for it".... what a joke.

Does he honestly think that switching from female to male will make a difference? A lot of people (including myself) love the male body. SE did a good job with male character models (especially miqote, roe and hyur midlander males). Tell him not to be surprised if someone uses a mod to mod his male character! xD

I mean come on. Let me ask you this: If he gets hit on, on his male character is he gonna switch back to female or just not play anymore? This whole issue is ridiculously stupid.


Ninja Edit: Your characters are pixels on a screen in a online video game. Like it or not, people will probably use mod tools to mod your character. FFXI had something similar. All of this over a AVATAR and not who you really look like. If it was your actual body then it could be considered harassment, but a Avatar? I'm sorry to tell you this but no one really cares.
