To be fair, the same is true for the emotes that came with both the Odin and Shiva statues. You pay $150 USD for the statue, not an emote (at least I hope); same as you do with artbooks and OSTs. This logic kind of falls flat when it's applied to both purchases...or it should be, anyways.

Really, the developers should try to get SE to give them funds to upgrade infrastructure so that there CAN be more account-wide items. They shouldn't say they're "reserving space for the more expensive merchandise bonuses" and then release more $24 USD mounts on the Mogstation. It's just like with their defense of the single-character Wind-Up Yotsuyu: "there isn't enough server space to store many more account-wide items" > has released 4 account-wide cash shop mounts since.

I normally don't care about the cash shop, and don't get up in arms over it, but that is really scummy on their part. Not gonna lie.

Ooooh, I like. So much I'm going to go off a bit and generalize it.
If nothing else, introducing a new inventory system will help get around the conflict of several charas having the same unique item, and getting around the merging headache.

Create an account-wide storage area, with the main objective of storing and managing your Mog Shop and promotional items.

    How would it work?
The Mog Mail containing the items will be sent to only one character. We know Mog Mails of such nature are theoretically limitless as they're not supposed to persist, so we already got around the problem of the limit of account wide keys they can manage.
Mog Shop purchases will let you designate which character to send it to. For Promotional codes, you can set a character to receive the items by default in the Mog Station. If no character was selected, they can either just tell you to set it before entering the code, or use a default of your oldest character. After entering the code, they tell you which chara it was sent to so you don't have to go looking for it.

The items attached to the Mog Mail:
Ideally, they won't even land in your inventory and will go directly to this new hypothetical storage area. But let's say your chara needs to pick them up. They can't use them directly, they can only place them inside the new storage bubble (henceforth referred to as 'bubble'). From THERE you can pull out usable versions of the items on every character you have on that service account.

    Additional QoL needed:
Gear-sets containing more than the one item will be condensed into gear coffers. That way instead of taking up 5 slots from this hypothetical bubble, it only takes one. Characters take out a copy of the coffer, and then open it to get the items inside. (Though this would be nice to have now, too)

    Ensuing QoL:
You don't clutter charas' inventories with gear you don't want just to clear up your mog mail.
Your mog mail is clugged on only the one chara, not on every alt you make.
If you accidentally discard an item, you can just pull a new copy from the bubble. They're all untradable and unique anyway. For the sake of simplifying this, housing items will be treated as consumables and should only be sent to the one character to be used on that character otherwise it's asking for abuse.

    Likely issues:
Like all forms of inventory, this will be limited. We can't escape this, and this is ultimately the reason given why they don't just make everything account wide. But this system at least helps this too, if not solve it completely.
Use the inventory space on our characters. Let us add and remove items from the bubble.

Let's say the bubble can contain 200 items at any given time. With the gear set being reduced to coffers you already have room for most items, but some of us might actually have more, and more are being released all the time via promotions and Mog Store.
By letting us decide what items stay in the bubble, we expand its storage. The trade-off is, obviously, removing account-wide access to these items until they're put back in the bubble. But the concept of alts being used as inventory extensions is not a new concept, nor is it going anywhere. You could buy every single mog shop item, get every promotional item, and this storage alt, between its inventory, 2 free retainers and saddlebag, will likely still have some room left. And this is inventory space SE is already willing to give us as part of our base subscription!

    Pros:
Solves basically every complaint they had so far by utilizing character inventory, which is something they include in your base subscription.

    Cons:
Moves the management responsibility from SE to the players as we're the ones responsible to keep track of items and make sure items are available to alts when we want them to. But I personally think it's a small price to pay.

I'm sure the servers would melt to the earths core the moment they tried to make an account wide inventory system.

The Mog Mail is rate-limited. When I created a new character on a server I haven't played on, and went to retrieve every account-level item... it took about 3 minutes, you could only retrieve one item and then have to wait like 30 seconds.

Cross-account (eg server independent) inventory is a bad idea because that will lead to market manipulation hell and give RMT easy ways to launder money/items to servers they can't create accounts on (eg congested worlds)

The way to actually deal with multiple characters on the same server is a lot more obvious, as people have been abusing it already. The "Solo FC" is how players exploit this already. The proper way would be to create a "family register" mechanic where you can specify any character on the service account, and that sends a 2-way confirmation to the other character. From that point any gear in the glamour dresser and any gear in the armoire can be glamoured (but not withdrawn.)

Petition to SE - Make More Cash Shop Items earnable trough game activities.

For example I just returned to WoW and I received this awesome mount from clearing Argus the Unmaker on Heroic difficulty. Before I left WoW back in November 2016 I also got yet another cool mount from beating Xavius on heroic as well. And these are just from current expansion, I have many other cool mounts from beating final bosses on heroic difficulty from earlier raids in previous expansions.
And in Argus case he also drops a totally different mount if you beat him in Mythic difficulty ...

How about we can get some cool mounts for beating Neo, Gkefka in Savage and from the Ultimate fights?

I don't want to wave my visa card in front of my screen, I want to get cool stuff like this from clearing 'hard' content.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Haven't done the newer ones as I no longer play as I got tired by all the stuff on mogstation instead of ingame. I do however sub again when I have 1 day left on house demolisher though ...
Still hoping for that one day XIV becomes good again.. maybe next expansion...
