Buying Stormblood on Steam or not?

Hello!
First off, I hope I'm not completely wrong in this part of the Forum but I've failed to find any better place for my question.

I have finally reached level 50 and want to buy the DLC soon. I have read about people having trouble because they bought it from the wrong place.

I own and play the game through Steam, I believe that's the only way I played (I had a long break) so I guess that's how I created my account too. (Any way to check and be sure how I created my account?)
But on the DLC page on Steam I've seen quite a few reviews saying not to buy the DLC on Steam.
At the same time I get warned not to buy the non-Steam version if I play on Steam.

I'm confused and don't want to spend my money on a product that's going to be incompatible with my game.

If your base game is a Steam license you must buy the expansion from Steam.
You can check your account type on MogStation (http://sqex.to/Msp). It shows something like "Standard (Steam)".
If you have a normal PC license then you can't register a Steam key either.

FINAL FANTASY XIV Online game packages available on Steam may only be registered and added on a Square Enix account that has the base game “FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Starter Edition" (or formerly known as "FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn”) purchased on Steam.

From the Square-Enix store:

Notice: This product is not compatible with the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. If you’ve purchased FFXIV: A Realm Reborn on Steam, then you must also purchase FFXIV: Stormblood on Steam to upgrade your existing account.

I imagine a lot of those people saying not to buy from steam got the game some other way, saw the expansion on steam about bought it(possibly during a steam sale), and then found out that the steam expansion wasnt compatible with the non-steam game. In your case, this is exactly what you want to buy. You have a steam account, so a steam expansion will allow you to continue your story. I imagine theres only one option, but just incase theyre still selling old codes make sure you get Stormblood(collectors edition or not is up to you). Stormblood is the 2nd expansion and comes bundled with the first expansion(heavensward) if you dont already have it.
