    Renaming FFXIV for 2.0/relaunch?

I know this may seem trivial to some, but is there anyone else out there that feels with the current name a bad taste is associated with the game? I'm talking about if you were to put yourself in someone else's shoes - someone who has not been keeping track of the game's fantastic progression towards relaunch.

What I was wondering, if there were any plans to rename FFXIV to something much simpler... essentially "Final Fantasy: Online". I feel this would have a nicer ring to it, and taking it out of the "numbering scheme" could potentially attract non-Final Fantasy players. There are still some people who I speak with day-to-day that are not Final Fantasy players, and have never really followed the genre. Some of them had no idea that FFXIV was even online!

That being said, I personally feel that it would fit so much more if during the 2.0 relaunch, the game was renamed something outside of the numbered franchise. If anything, ditch XIV altogether and keep FFXV named the 15th installment, and just forget XIV ever happened.

Who else feels this could have a positive impact on the game and attract more people? Hopefully, people who otherwise said they would never pick this game up again after 2010's launch, or those who have never played a Final Fantasy.

To be honest, since it deviates from the standard style of "numbered" Final Fantasies anyways, it fits better to NOT be called "14". I also think FFXI should not have been numbered, as well.

unfortunately, they cannot rename the game because the only reason they are redoing it is an attempt to salvage the Numerical Series Reputation.

I thought they tried that with XIII-2? Quite honestly, with the right direction and promotion for FFXV (and hopefully Versus), they wouldn't need XIV to "fix" the brand.

Yeah, but you know... It Still is a new story of the Final Fantasy Series, that if they would do a book about Final Fantasy stories it would take place.
They've decided so, and so it'll be anyway.

It's a nice idea OP, but I don't see it happening. There's too much tradition in the Final Fantasy name, including the main numberings. In keeping with your idea, notice how different the promotional screenshot for 2.0 looks. FFXIV's promotional materials feature bright colors and normal text, whereas the promotional shot has a darker aesthetic, and the "Version 2.0" subtitle stands out in neon amber. They definitely understand the stigma associated with FFXIV 1.0.

Though FFXI was a glorified FFIII, so it fit in just fine with the main series lol. Renaming XIV will likely bring in even more criticism for it, like "They had to rename the game to fool people into buying it!"

They could probably stick with it's Rapture codename, but they're trying to turn this game into a FF and FF Mystic Quest was just as much of a FF game as FFII or X.

Only spinoffs styled games tend to be outside of the numerals..like Tactics, Crystal Chronicles and so on since they tend to be a completely different style of game, but FFXI for example was every much of an RPG as it was an MMO just like XIV is.

To be fair though, both Final Fantasy XI and XIV are still "Final Fantasy: Online" as seen:

Just sell the PS3 version and rereleased PC version with some crazy subtitle.

Notice how on the title for CoP, "Chains of Promathia" takes a smaller font than FFXI does.

Instead, just put "Final Fantasy XIV 2.0" as a smaller title, and then put "REBIRTH OF A NATION" as the title (in reference to rebuilding Eorzea after the fall of Dalamud)

    or something like that.
