A guess? Every job uses aether in some way and evidence suggests it can manifest more than raw elemental energies. Monks' chi, bards' songs, ninjas' mudra, etc. etc. Fray already told us that aetherial manipulation motivated primarily by bad feelz manifests as magic-like effects via "darkside", so it's probably as simple as that paladins' heroic, valorous mindset whilst manipulating aether gives a light-ey glow.

What determinates what "kind" of magic is being used is the pseudo science behind it and most importantly the school of magic that teaches, teached or invented it.

A lot of jobs seems to use a more simple kind of Magic or even just pure concentration or release of aether throught martial arts.
