The game gives you 980 inventory slots for free.
Plus 200 glamour item slots, and space for furniture = to the house size you own. 300 for me, and 30 outdoor spots. So I have 1510 inventory slots with the base subscription. What game gives you that much inventory space?
Even if you go off just character inventory its 630 inventory slots. with armory chest, character inventory, and saddlebag.
My Sub is 72.99 per 6 Months, because I have 2 extra retainers so I can have the 3 gatherers and a battle class. I could be at 2 retainers and have no inventory issues.

If we're going to be including things that save inventory slots (house furnishing, glamour dresser), then WoW would have:
- 136 inventory slots (using 30 slot bags)
- 240 bank slots (using 30 slot bags)
- 98 material bank slots
- 160 void storage slots.
Then there's the stuff that used to go into the inventory, but were moved to collections
- 448 toys (flavour items, like ones that turn you into a different race for a short time)
- 83 heirloom items (gear that scales with level)
- 6517 gear/weapon appearances (amount varying based on class)
For a total of 7682.

To be fair the developers haven't exactly been known to make processes that shrink inventory bloat. Recipes that take 6 ingredients. Tons of different currencies that are inventory items, even AFTER the currency tab was added. Lots of items that can't be placed in the armoire (pretty much anything from mog station or special events). The game gives you 980 inventory slots for free.

After 5 years that limited inventory space, while seeming infinite at the start, gets small REALLY quick.
As has been said before, this is a pretty bad deal for the extra inventory space. Two extra retainers is cheaper than the 70 extra chocobo bag slots. MB access is in game. About the only thing the premium app does is allow you to manage retainer inventory better, something that should have absolutely been in game.

I dont really horde mats, I just gather as needed, much easier on the inventory. And they recently updated the armoire to take non cash shop event items, like the promotion stuff from the fanfests and the maid/butler outfits and the items associated with those events. To be fair the developers haven't exactly been known to make processes that shrink inventory bloat. I know, I was the one who suggested it earlier in the thread that it was an extremely poor deal and bad design flaw. I just think it's a bit of a stretch for people to start flailing about the mobile app locking inventory space behind a $5 fee, when in hindsight retainers have been doing that with a $2 fee for the longest of times now, way longer than before the app was even conceived. However, by that perspective alone, the app should be dead in the water upon arrival because anyone can clearly see that paying $2 as opposed to $5, you're obviously getting more bang for your buck. You are right in that retainer inventory management should have been in-game from the get-go, honestly, so should extra inventory space in that regard entirely. But, it is what it is right now and we're at the point where it's not going to change because it's already too late in that sense. The app does everything that I can already do from the comforts of my home and honestly speaking, isn't worth the free version in that regard. As has been said before, this is a pretty bad deal for the extra inventory space. Really, the mobile app was designed for people that can't be separated from the game or don't want to be for very long. It's a case of the Patient VS the Impatient. It'll be used by people who are either bored and/or need to be connected to XIV during the time that they can't log in as opposed towards the people who are like "Meh. It can wait until I get home later". That's what the whole app speaks to me about.
You have the portion of the people who can't wait until they can log in from their PC or PS4 to check their retainers, sell/buy items, chat with friends, etc., and then you have the other side of the fence that don't need to feel connected to the game 24/7. It's all personal preference and I only see like...a small, maybe even half of the playerbase consecutively using it while everyone else ignores it for the most part. It all depends on what "other stuff" they start adding to it possibly and if it concerns buying/selling houses? Welllll....I don't know if we really want to go down that road...

so why are we paying for inventory space again?

Because the idea of paying for more inventory space via the retainers has been a thing since the development and first inception of the Mogstation, but, it's easier to just focus on a really bad idea and design for a mobile app and complain about that instead when this isn't the first time things like this have happened. Although, people tend to like to ignore that paying for more retainers existed long before the mobile app did sometimes.

I'm quite surprised how much information people seem to have about the app without it being out yet or with any of the pricing and details actually confirmed.

So far people have been discussing what SE has given us as details so I don't really understand where this is coming from. The app doesn't need to be out in order for us to discuss what SE has already announced as official details.
