Welcome! There are so many tips, but I'm at work right now. I'll add tips later, but perhaps another player can get this started?

    EDIT of Tips:

    Around Town
In case you haven't already been filled in, there are several lankmarks in each town you should be aware of. The two most important, undoubtedly, are the Adventurer's Guild and the Market Wards in each city, though the names vary, e.g. The Quicksand and The Dunes for Ul'dah. The Adventurer's Guild includes the guildleve counter, where you can obtain minor repeatable quests for gil, items, and xp, the Retainer NPC, where you can hire your own personal servant/salesman, and several NPCs selling basic gear, including the level 1 weapon for every single class, needed for trying out new classes. In addition, there's a bell for summoning your retainer, so you can deposit or retrieve items from the AG. In 1.21 you'll be able to rent a room inside as well, where logging out will give you an XP bonus for the next day.
The Market Wards primarily serve as the heart of player commerce in Eorzea. In the various wards, players can place their retainers and sell up to 10 items at once in the retainers' bazaars. Players can also buy items directly or simply locate them from the Item Search Counter option. For this reason, and since it's right next to the town's Aetheryte Plaza, most players hang out near the Wards during downtime, sometimes showing off their newly-obtained Ifrit or Moogle weapons. The wards also serve a purpose for quests, as the location for Grand Company Headquarters and special in-town zones for Main Scenario quests.
Apart from these, every town also has many NPC merchants. Most are in two large clusters, but there are also merchants in every guild and a few additional once scattered about, including some in the centers of the Battlecraft, Spellcraft (?), Armorfitters (?), and Lower Tailors wards. Between the guild NPCs and the clusters, every town has a shop covering every class, selling basic gear and materials, with higher tier gear and materials offered at the guilds themselves. These guilds offer quests at levels 20, 30, and 36 for their class, and often have sidequests available from NPCs inside. Finally, every town has a chocobo stable and airship dock, either near or inside the same building as the Adventurer's Guild.

    Class Tips
Start working on a gathering class and a crafting class that can use its materials. Start now while you still have inventory space left, before you become a hoarder like me! It's a great source of gil. If you have time to burn through your leve allowances, I'd recommend spending them on local leves, as it's far more costly to level a crafting class outside of leves than to level a fighting or gathering class.

(Rough) One Sentence Description of Every Fighting Class
Archer Deals sustained damage from a distance and, with Bard in 1.21, provides buffs for the whole party.
Conjurer Provides healing and defensive buffs, as well as some damage from earth and wind spells, with more potent healing as a White Mage in 1.21.
Gladiator Resists large amounts of damage and generates large amounts of emnity, with more tankiness and some healing as Paladin in 1.21, but doesn't put out as much damage as other classes.
Lancer Crowd control and large amounts of sustained damage with more reach than other melee classes, and more capabilities in 1.21 as Dragoon.
Marauder Emnity generation through greater damage and AoE skills, especially in 1.21 as a Warrior, but not as much tankiness as Gladiator.
Pugilist Sustained damage and disabling effects with evasion-based tanking and elemental damaged, enhanced further as a Monk in 1.21.
Thaumaturge Massive magic damage and some crowd control, enhanced further as Black Mage in 1.21.

Whew! Feel free to ask some pointed questions, but hopefully some of that information is helpful. There are also a few great go-to websites to keep in mind.
www.mooglebox.com is a relatively new database which serves as a thorough and powerful reference for almost anything, including abilities, gathering locations, recipes, and gear. For the actual locations of mobs, ffxiv.yg.com is a great resource. mooglebox even links to it for NM locations. They also have a tool that allows players to automatically submit mob location and drop data.

    Good luck!

    Tip for meeting new people:

A lot of players gather in Ul'dah. Shouts are still pretty common, I can't guarantee it's the same on your sever but in general people still tend to shout in Ul'dah.

With the recent inclusion of a competent party search feature you can also use that to attempt to group up with individuals. You can set your own parameters such as location, class, level, etc.

This can be a fun way to meet new people as well.

    Tips for leveling:

As a Gladiator I'd recommend leveling Pugilist and/or Conjurer to gain access to abilities that will help you heal yourself. This will greatly reduce downtime between fights actually being able to utilize your current TP to maintain a safe amount of HP and by having a use for some of Gladiator's native MP in a pinch or in between fights. While you are soloing you may also want to "flag" yourself as available for an experience points party as there may be someone in your similar situation half a world away.

    Tips for making money:

To start out, I'd suggest doing leves to get some gil under your belt. I'm not sure how many a new player has access too but 99 leves is the maximum amount. You can use these to not only get money, but sometimes armor and items will drop as a reward. It's up to you what you want to do with such rewards. If you're at all interested I'd also suggest doing local leves for leveling up your crafting classes. Not only does crafting help you in the long run by being able to repair your own gear and make new gear but most crafting leves actually require you to go to Aetheryte camps in far off areas. This will help you get the lay of the land. While you're exploring, take note of monster levels in the area as you may want to come back sometime later to use them as experience fodder.
