    Books first.

You are using Instinctual Appraisal. You really want to use Impulsive Appraisal II.

There is Impulsive Appraisal, L 53, and Impulsive Appraisal II L 61. Both increase rarity by PER x 0.9. IA has a 30% chance to activate Discerning Eye for free but IA II is 30% - 100% to activate DE, percentage depends on your perception. What they don't mention is compared to the level or difficulty of what you are trying to collect.

DE is +50% rarity on your next appraisal. Your final appraisal should be Methodical.

    P. S. Kasha is your current best food.

Books first. The only thing i would even consider buying before i had all the folklore books would be a small amount of the scrip bait for fishing. But that would only be if you enjoy fishing/need to go after a specific fish that required said bait. The books pay for themselves by letting you go after higher paying collectables, and letting you get your own rare crafting mats. Also, when they add new materials the books will automatically be updated and youll be able to harvest any of that stuff right away too(provided you hit the required stats).

As for appraisal skills, most people are well advised to stay away from Instinctual Appraisal(the .8-1.5 one). The "beginners" rotation uses just Methodical(100% predictable). The "advanced" rotation mixes some Impulsive's(.9 perception with 30% chance of free DE) in with Methodicals, and replaces Imp with Imp2 at 61(no extra drawbacks, can provide more then 30% odds of free DE). There is a "gamblers" rotation that uses the randomized Instinctual Appraisal. It has a chance to give the absolute best quality, and a chance to give you the worst quality(with the average being a touch worse then you typically get using the advanced rotation - hence most people should leave it alone).

Thank you for the guide Caimie and everyone else for the tips! I have my Miner and Botanist to 70 now and ready to move on to yellow scrips. Not sure what I will be buying with them although I would think it will be easy enough to tell.

I have been working up my gatherers with the goal to start crafting again. I wanted to be able to gather the majority of my mats. One question, Do you think I should level up a Fisher? Not sure how important this class is to the crafting classes. I'm sure it comes in handy with Culinary. Just not sure if the time investment is worth it...thx

So my advice would be to yes level fishing, but to do it at your comfort level. If you dont enjoy it then mainly use GC turn ins and maybe the odd leve if you have time/cash(fishing leves can often be bought off the MB). A handful of GSM recipes call for pearls and the like, some of the best crafter food uses some sort of fish(this would be a CUL use but to benefit other classes), and there are a few fish that ALC process into Oils that get used in crafting. So yeah you can go awhile without bumping into a need for fish, but often when it happens your choices are get it yourself or pay dearly. The last tier of crafted tools(so not the current new ones from 4.3, the ones one step down from 4.1) all used Snailfish Oil as an important ingredient. Im sure you dont have to think that hard to figure out where Snailfish Oil came from. So yeah, id say slowly background level it up and hopefully when you need it youll have it.
