Specifically Gosetsu (For a bit of post context, I've just gotten to the point where he's introduced via Lady Yugiri).
Why do I get the vibe that he's how the player base views SAM mains at the moment?

nah, that's not true.
i like Gosetsu.
He's actually a very likable fellow, he's just a bit stern for the Doman's to return home at that point. The SAM hate is a reddit meme more than anything.
I suppose that's fair. He just came across as very boisterous/obnoxious in his introductory cutscenes. I'll give him a bit more of a chance.
Gosetsu's a pretty interesting, complex guy. There's still much we don't really know about him. I do like his character, though, and I'm anxious to see how the rest of his story and background unfold.
I'm a SAM main. I didn't know I was subject to a stigma. What's this all about?
This isn't aimed at you personally, obviously, but from my experience (which admittedly is limited), but most of the people I've encountered that claim to be SAM mains embrace the classes' selfish nature wholeheartedly, is all.
Basically SAM's bring no raid utility, yadda yadda *insert Heavensward monk here* level stuff.
It's not only that. Its also the fact that the vast majority of the people that claim to be SAM mains are so horrendously terrible at the game the fact that they are playing something with naturally high base damage is the only reason they contribute at all.
Um what? What does that even mean? I don't know how the player base feel about Gosetsu
