Gotta agree with the oversimplification mentioned above. Loved hw dark knight for how active it was and the risk reward + constant mp drain on dark side. That said unless there's a major rework of the game there's no real chance of it not being boring. Our bosses are scripted, we memorize rotations then rinse and repeat till either the boss is dead or we are.

I didn't want to play a FOTM job. As far as group positionals go: In dungeons you AOE, which don't have positionals, and bosses don't ever move (or are full circle thus no positionals) The handful of savage/ex bosses that require actual movement and care to maximize positionals is extremely low, or trivially easy to manage.

SAM has positionals. not many, but he has them ^^ also when aoe'ing on SAM you switch constantly between cone aoe's in front of you and circle aoe's around you, wich often requires repositioning yourself.

but you are right, positioning yourself and the enemys correctly is important for tank gameplay.

What SAM ability has positional requirement? Can't think of any off the top of my head.

I find the tanking boring, because : dps cycle is too easy, and also because the cycle of CDs is just too easy too.
I mean, when you know your CDs, you just have to it and wait until the next time you need it.
I think it would be funnier if the DRK, just for exemple, get a lot of short CDs like TBN but has to play with those CDs instead of Rempart.

Gekko and kasha have positionals and as mentioned the aoes are either the conal iajutsu or combos centered around the samurai.

Ah yeah Gauge increase for hitting those, but no dps loss (well not directly anyway) if you don't unlike most other positionals. The AoE's i don't really think that matters a whole lot in this discussion. As long as you're looking at your target it will hit regardless if its the cone or the circle.

Well if the dps cycle was overly complex would be a bit unfair no? i mean sure, it could be more fun that way (for some people) but it's hardly the direction to take tanking when we already have a shortage of tanks.

For me personally, I don't find tanking boring per se. But i would like it if they engaged both tanks more on encounters, mechanics that requires both tanks to contribute to solve. We already have some of those, but majority of encounters if you are not actively tanking you are just a slightly worse version of a dps. Perhaps a more engaging tanking experience if they lowered the cooldown of provoke and forced tank swaps more often.

I would say, in HW, gameplay speaking only, we had: the PLD, easy for everyone, not hard to master, the WAR, in the middle and fun to play, and the DRK, considered to be hard by most of the players.
It was good, they were almost different in there gameplay and skill floor.
I'm not english, and I don't know how to say what I want to say, but now, the three tanks job are quite at the same level in term of gameplay and skillfloor, maybe we need to make them really different each other to make people playing tank?
They tried to make them easier, don't seem to work because the amount of tank in the game hasn't changed, so now, they need to try something else to make people wants to play tank.
That what I'll do if I were in Yoshida's team, since they seem to want FF XIV during some years more.

In wow, for example, the warrior tank has three abilities, shield slam, devastate and shield block, now these three abilities work together in pretty good synergy, shield block increases your blocking chance and at the same time increased the damage of shield slam, and devastate has a chance to reset the cooldown of shield slam while shield slam increases the duration of shield block. If we were to look at the other tanks in WoW, their rotation is based around keeping themselves alive, not necessarily doing damage, blood death knight uses DOT's to heal itself and the paladin builds up charges to do massive self healing bursts.

First of all, you can edit your post to bypass character limits.

Second of all, Dark Knight is the worst example for this. You literally have zero mitigation outside of roleactions until Level 70 (Dark Mind doesn't count, most trash isn't magic AA). You also lost most of your Level 50-60 kit and it was reworked into 60-70 kit.

DRK isn't even remotely playable until 68.

If you wanted to talk about tanking being boring, you should level WAR. Or even PLD. Heck I especially recommend PLD. You'll clearly see just how inferior DRK is, especially since DRK is literally JUST a carboncopy of Paladin but with none of the defensive cooldowns or DoT, and only 1 stance instead of 2. DRK is just PaladinLITE, until you get The Blackest Night. Leveling DRK is the worst leveling in the game.

Ever since 4.0 DRK has been the worst job to level period. Mitigation is horrendous until Lvl 70 when you get TBN.

I honestly don't see DRK getting fixed in 4.3 outside of potency changes.

And many people who played tank in the beginning of the expansion switched to DPS because of how bad tank balance was
