GDRP - How will FFXIV be affected?

So, I've been reading up about how another MMORPG has decided because of the new EU privacy laws. I'm just wondering, how is FFXIV going to be affected by the General Data Protection Regulation.

Are Square Enix going to be complying with the regulations to keep FFXIV alive for European players, or are we going to have to look elsewhere? As a European affected by this change, I'm concerned, especially seeing that another MMORPG has made the decision to pull the plug.

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

I imagine complying to the new regulations wouldn't take much from SE, they probably already have an EU legal team and the only personal information that would be deleted should someone requests it is all account information and chat logs.

I suspect the publishers of Ragnarok Online didn't want to spend legal costs having the required lawyers representing them in EU.

Yes, if anything I expect they will release an updated Privacy Policy that addresses some of the points in the legislation, like information about the information they collect and what they use it for, how to get/export your data, how to have your data removed, the controls they have in place when transferring your data, and so on. As you say, I expect WP may not have had representation in the EU and didn't want to deal with the controls they'd have to put in place and legal implications (plus large potential fines if they get something wrong)... but Square Enix already has a massive presence in the EU and will be able to deal with it.

I'm working with prep work for GDPR at my company and I believe SE don't have to adjust much regarding our data, at least not to a extent. Of course they had to follow the EU regulations for GDPR.

A big thing about GDPR is companies isn't allowed anymore keep data or share data longer than needed for business, share it with unauthorized parties, we have the right to request what data they store and correct any incorrect data etc.

Another thing with GDPR is that the company needs to explain WHY they need certain information from you. If there isn't a very specific reason then they're required to not ask it basically. I can't imagine it affecting SE or most game companies much since it doesn't take a whole lot of personal info to make an FFXIV account for example. We'll definitely see a policy update though, that's already happening in lots of games.

Let me also point out as a former Ragnarok online player on the official international server that game has been bleeding out for years... last I checked upon log in there are around 2k players online at a given time including vendor alts (no market boards) and bots... so I suspect they decided with the new rules in place it wasn't financially viable anymore... not to mention it was f2p so they were probably selling some sort of user data...

Right. It affects more service providers and many other businesses but i can't imagine many gaming services will change. Privacy policy possibly.
