    Security Tokens

    Recently acquired a physical security token, noticed it cannot be removed without logging in, it has no sort of special emergency removal code.

    So, my question is, if this thing runs out of battery(breaking isn't an option as i will take more care of this than do for myself), how would i go about recovering my account?

    I've never tried personally (I switched across to the app version the day it came out and have never looked back!), but I've heard the emergency removal password for the physical tokens is the security serial code on the back.

    But although it doesn't have a low battery indicator (it's a rebranded Digipass GO 6), you will notice the screen becoming faint long before the battery gives up completely. As soon as you see the screen becoming faint, or taking a few seconds longer than normal to appear, make plans to get a new one and/or switch to app on your phone etc.

    Edit: Serial code, not security code...

    Just remember if you disable a physical token YOU CAN NEVER REUSE THAT TOKEN AGAIN. I would strongly suggest using the smartphone version.

    Question answered, but a side comment to ease your mind. I've had my security token since 1.0 launch (~8 years). Don't count on the battery running out any time soon.


    But it would be a good idea take a picture of the back of your token or write down the serial number, in case it gets lost or eaten.

    I lost my physical token in a move and was obviously unable to log in without it until I called SE customer service. I didn't save the serial number or anything, but they were able to confirm my identity with other info (Date of birth, billing card number, etc.) and removed the token from my account without any issue. All in all took about 15 minutes.

    This, I lost mine when my phone died and hadn't copied the code down ahead of time. Just confirming my other account details allowed them to go in and reset it for me with no hassle. For future reference however there /is/ an emergency removal code on your SE account and I would highly recommend copying it for the future. It'll save you a phone call.

    Can also copy and paste it into an email, send it to yourself, then pin it so that it stays at the top of your inbox(at least that's what I do for mine...it's one of the three emails that sits there all the time until I no longer need it.

    no there is not.

    only the phone app has an emergency removal code, the physical token doesn't have one.

    the only way to remove the physical token without logging in (wich is obviously not possible when you lost the token or the battery is dead), is to call the support. however, the battery will last for years! so don't worry too much about it ^^

    still using the one that came with 1.0CE and the numbers are like ink black.

    They last near forever if your not mistreating them or letting them get super hot
