Wanting to try tanking - SB advice....

Coming back after long break and am seeing that a lot has changed with SB (which I have purchased). Have mostly played healer since Everquest and and have an itch to try tanking. I'm interested in a Pally, but up through Heaven I read that Pallys were not necessarily the favorite at end game though I know many favored that class. I'll try to be specific in what I'm looking for:

    1. Not hard to play. I'm a casual player so it might be hard to master a difficult class quickly. Easy to play is not boring to me.
    2. Have never played a tank before.
    3. Have really been trying to research but don't know if there is enough data yet on SB to determine how different tank jobs are working out in end game.

    So my questions are:
    1. Is the community here tolerant of new tanks as long as they own up they are new?
    2. In SB, is Pally job more desirable now?
    3. If Pally isn't looked on well, which tank job(s) is/are being successful?

    Thanks!

Pallys are at a good spot now. They do good damage even after the nerfs, are easy to play and Still stand after a Meteor fell down upon them. (Hi @ hollowed ground).

Overall the best choice of Tank for returners and beginners. People are, mostly, tolerant. If you think you need assistance just ask for it. Of course there are ALWAYS some elitist douches that will call you bad or whatever comes to theyr mind but the safest thing is really to just not listen. Hang on to the friendly people and you will be fine.

    My opinions on your questions.

    1) Yes and no. I would say that for the most part the community is understanding and accommodating to new tanks or players new to any role as long as you let people know you are new and it is apparent you are trying and willing to take positive advice. You will of course run into impatient players, jerks and trolls that will give you a hard time, but honestly that is not unique to being new to something or unique to any role. Luckily the true jerks are very much the minority of players.

    2) PLD is much improved over it's state in Heavensward and is overall a great tank and in a very good spot.

    3) WAR is also considered, and quite frankly is, quite powerful. It is also not that difficult to play but some players find them to feel a bit "scarier" to play or more "overwhelming", but I would mostly chalk those feelings up to a difference in preferred or expected play-style. I personally find PLD to be more measured, steady and rhythmic in the way it plays where you are doing things in more waves or cycles, whereas WAR is more "bursty" where you are more building up to slightly spaced out big burst attacks, which makes it feel a little more "actiony" if that makes sense. Basically I would say if your preference is more defensive feeling, solid and steady, go PLD. If you like to feel a bit more offensive and aggressive with more "me smash you!", go WAR. In the end though, I would recommend to level and try out all of the tanks after getting your feet wet with one of them, at least if you are planning on becoming a tank main.

    Thanks for the replies....

Yes, understand will get hurled at from time to time. Got my skin thickened from playing healers.

And, glad to hear pallys are in a good place. Appreciate your advice on returning players and sounds like that is a good place to start - the play style you mention sounds good to me. My high is only a 31 SCH so far. I'll certainly give the warrior a shot too. Never know, may surprise myself and find I like that style too.

If I had to rank the tanks by difficulty I would put it as
    EASY WAR PLD DRK HARD

    at least from my prospective.

WAR normally goes by the global cooldown without much being done in-between. The worst that could happen is that you run out of TP and have to wait a few seconds.

PLD has a hard time building its own gauge at level 50+ out of its dps stance, which can be hard to use smartly. Not to mention the off global cooldowns and its own DoT that needs to be kept up at all times.

DRK can very easily run out of MP rendering easy attention generation useless, especially in darkside which removes natural mp regen that PLD will enjoy. Not to mention proper use of Dark Arts makes using off global cooldowns with global cooldowns essential for proper play.

This is the tanks at the higher levels btw, at the lower levels all tanks play similarly with few differences.

Ok Dhaid. End game info is what I was looking for so good thots. I already had a 13 glad from before and am going to run with that first. But, it's good to hear an opinion that WAR might be good too. Will most def give it a try as well.
