What's a legit way to learn to play on keyboard?

As others have said, it's practice. Find a set up you're comfortable with. For example, some use MMO mice, which I can-to get the hang of, some use keybinds.

I use keybinds myself- 3 bars Q-Y and 1-6, with Shift and Alt forms (had to remind a few keys). Extraneous non-combat abilities are on a side bar without a keybind, except for mounts and sprinting. Strafe and moving backwards with A,S,D and move forward by holding both mouse buttons down. Took me some time to get it down, but I've been using it for years.

I also endeavor to keep similar abilities between jobs in the same keybinds. For example, damage buffs between DPS bound to one set of keys, oGCD attacks on a similar set of keys. It's not always possible, of course, but it works well enough.

I could use some more keyboard skills too. I play on pc with keyboard and mouse and really don't use the keyboard for much. Keyboard keys are so widely spaced and I have tiny hands. I can barely even reach 1-3 let alone any of the F keys or anything else, and forget it if I'm reaching up there and then I also need to move with WASD, because my fingers can't be in both places at once. Really the only keyboard shortcuts I use is for non battle stuff like opening inventory or challenge log etc.


For me the way to play with mouse and keyboard is to get one of those mice with 12 buttons on the side. I use my mouse to hit all my skills and also to turn my character around quickly and strafe. Can you even turn quickly around and not just slowly back peddle with just the keyboard? I never have seen a way, but probably just didn't search well enough. I only use keyboard it for some WASD movement, usually in conjunction with the mouse for ease of turning and strafing, and then I use shift and ctrl as modifiers for hotbars 2 and 3, and also some alt modifier for the pet hotbar on summoner.

You'll get used to whatever you want to use though. I can't even imagine trying to play with a controller. I plugged in a ps4 controller one time to see how the other half lives and after a few minutes I was like NOPE sooo clunky. It would definitely take me a bit of time to get used to controller if I did decide I wanted to switch, so nothing to it but to practice until it feels natural.
