How is ilvl an issue while leveling?

I'm running every dungeon at least once myself, especially when leveling a new role, after it gets unlocked - not only does it help if I get it on roulette sometime, with the guaranteed drops it helps gear up painlessly too. That being said, sadly I know a lot of people going through 60-69 on Shire only (not always augmented, even), though I think worst I've seen was a level 59 astrologian with the lvl 30 weapon you get after unlocking the class. Paaaaainful run. Got me always double-checking if my gear's at least more or less up to date for the content; don't want to bring that kind of pain on anyone haha.

You can actually join a Level 69 dungeon with ilvl 0. Nothing can stop you to do so. Try it.

Yea leveling dungeons dont have ilvl requirements. They only have lvl requirements. You can go in naked. As long as you are the appropriate level for the content you can get in no problem.

Its a problem that needs to be addressed. One reason why I avoid leveling roulette like the plague.

Interesting points in this thread. I guess it does shed a little light on things. I hadn't thought of leveling a different job on the same toon, which I guess can account for lagging behind the ilvl curve. Doing the MSQ, your gear gets upgraded automatically, just by doing the quests. But that obviously won't happen if you've already done those quests.

Still, though, my alt job is BLM. It's at level 50. Though I don't get MSQ upgrades on that job, I still go to the market board and purchase gear to keep up every couple levels or so. So, I dunno. You should be able to keep up.

As for not having i290 gear when you hit 70, there's no excuse for that. I just dinged 70 last night, and the first thing I did instinctively was the level 70 job quest. I got a full set of antiquated gear and then went to the market board to get some pieces that weren't included in the set. I'm now at ilvl 293. All set for Ala Mhigo! Looking forward to wrapping up SB.

if i see undergeared player i always think: how do they play/finish singleplayer rpg's? its not possible that way.

Up to level 50 for most alt jobs there's a fair amount of slack since job quests hand out gear, you'll probably get some dungeon drops as you go, and you have NPC vendors to fill in the gaps. From 50-60, you can mostly make do with NPC gear from Ishgard and dungeon drops, and save up your poetics from the 50/60 and alliance roulettes for the base Shire gear, and can upgrade if you really like grinding tomes. That'll keep you in good shape until the lvl65 dungeon, at which point you can run it a few times for your guaranteed drops and update some gear before moving on. If you can't get Shire gear, the Ishgard shops sell i255 gear, and you can still work with the dungeon drops from the low 60's dungeons. You don't necessarily HAVE to have the absolute best gear while leveling, but upgrading as much as you can as you go will make things much smoother for yourself and those you run with, so it's highly recommended.

The pieces are better defense wise for a tank yes, but the problem is the main weapon and the pieces for dps and heals are very modest increases. It's a case of both people being right; tanks should gear, but DPS and heals will only see modest gains since the bulk of the upgrades are in defense. To get better stats overall from augmented needs HQ whites at 64, or dungeon gear from 65 on. It might be an argument for them to scale stats a little more during levels, so that even NQ level-approriate gear is a decent boost over certain pieces.
