Why should SE expand our inventory slots, when its clear as day that people are willing to pay for them. Additional retainers are doing so well they locked the 9th one behind a paywall just to see if people would go for that. Guess what people in Japan cant wait for this app to come out so they can drop 5$ a month on it.
It is a slippery slope. What if the kupo nuts or the other currency from the premium only grants exclusive mounts, hairstyles, emotes and clothing in the future? But its ok because all of that is optional through the app.
If that happens will it still be ok because its optional and doesnt affect combat gameplay?
The app does not make me want to unsubscribe. However it does make me very cautious in the next year and my continuation to support the game through my sub.

This is not optional in the same way a mount or emote in the cash shop is optional. This is inventory space, something that players make constant use of and is pretty integral to an MMO with so many items to manage.
For you to even use the "it's optional" argument in this case just shows how defensive some of you are towards SE. You didn't even stop to think how optional this truly is.

Let's consider how optional this is. The app currently gives you 70 extra slots in your Chocobo Saddlebags, and the potential for another retainer. That costs $5/month. Currently you have the option to spend $2/month to get 175 extra slots (on a Retainer), which you can do as many as six times. Given how many players do not have additional retainers, it is safe to conclude that the extra retainers are indeed "optional." (And if extra retainers are not optional, why is this non-optionality problem only coming up now?)
Obviously in terms of total storage, if extra retainers are optional, the app is optional. It's more expensive while also giving less slots, after all. BUT, the Chocobo Saddlebags are much more accessible than Retainer Inventory. So is having 70 extra slots that are available everywhere optional? As you say, inventory space is "something that players make constant use of and is pretty integral to an MMO with so many items to manage." Fair enough.
So here's my question. Would you rather have 350 extra retainer slots, or 70 extra saddlebag slots? Personally, I'd much prefer the 350 retainer slots. Currently you can hold 210 items on your person (including current saddlebags), and no matter how much I gather or buy, I'm never filling up nearly all of that in one go. I'm going to have at least one chance to dump extra items onto my retainer before my on-person inventory fills up, which means that total slots are more useful than total on-person slots. Since 350 retainer slots are optional and cost $4/month, I must therefore conclude that paying $5/month for a less-useful 70 saddlebag slots is also optional. (Frankly I also have to conclude that the app isn't worth it, which is why I'll be ignoring the premium plan.)

Being that VERY few people have the maximum amount of retainers AND all their storage is completely maxed out; I would say the term "optional" fits very well. I only have 6 retainers, none of which are anywhere close to full, my Saddlebag is only half full, and my personal inventory is LITERALLY nearly empty. Stopping to think how optional it is, I'd say additional storage is negligible at most. I use my mounts WAY more than I use any un-used storage space I have. I could very easily dump everything I have into 3 retainers, the current Saddlebag and my inventory and STILL have plenty of space to spare. Which is the case for a majority of the player base. Thus, defining any expansion to storage/inventory optional.
Do you even know what optional means?Optional means = available to be chosen but not obligatory.
Personally I don't agree with many things that SE offers players. Unlike most comments here I will give reasons on why.
Emotes; if doing emotes that are NOT quality / item based (kai arts, music, ect ) should be available for everyone in one way or another. Some of the emotes were event based and no longer available which makes sense they would be sold. It's not SE fault that people missed it.
Mounts; Personally I'm disgusted by this being sold. If anything they could of made it into some hardcore quest to collect parts also. Example the optional Magictek mounts.
Jump Potions Their excuse was to help people catch up to play with their friends...only draw back made players miss out on pretty much how the job works. Witch leave it to veterans having to carry these people until they learn it....just plain stupid in my opinion and a waste of money. If it's already in the game, as part of the main design it should not be sold. This was brought about emotional people that wanted a trophy for just trying.
Dye's; Metallic can be gather by retainer exploration does not really need to be sold.
These are just a few examples of stupid thing that are on sale.
In the end no matter how many threads pop up, how many times people argue players white knight the company, the result is the same. It is not obligatory. Big companies will take advantage of people who want games to be easier for them it's a known fact that most humans being envy those with the haves, and don't want to be part of the have not's. As for those who claim it's not about the money or envy...lets get real it is otherwise there would not be soo many threads and would just say "oh look new stuff...nah I'll pass" and let it be. No instead people are hypocrites in one way or another rage quit...blah blah blah... I will not support this company ..blah blah blah..

@Talraen
In general, this is just more "in your face" then retainer inventory. Most people treat retainers like a storage box, just dumping anything they think they may want later in there.
The saddlebag is more of an extension of your active inventory. Most people don't care about their retainers, but people have been begging for extra inventory space (which we did get in SB, tbf).

Your point of contention is numerical. And because this has all been "rooted in logic", the term 'optional' is is thrown around all over. And you come to your own conclusion by putting it all in a cost/benefit because due to your own personal choices, you don't use as much inventory as others who express disgust towards the app situation.
The app offers double the chocobo saddle bag and an additional retainer upon the (currently assumed) condition that you reached the retainer cap. Now, because you are not at the second part of the rewards for a cost benefit perspective, you see it as 350 vs 70 vs someone who could already have max retainers can see it as 225 for (potentially) $7 disregarding the remaining features of the app.
If you do have all retainers and hoard because whatever reason and the app is offered, to those in those circumstance who were additionally looking for more space does come off as a steep charge for less storage space.
It is still a choice? Yes.
It is still convenient? Yes.
It is still something that is apart from the game? Yes.
Do you still have the choice/option to not purchase it? Yes.
But the point of contention for many who are un-subbing is grossly ignored, which doesn't come from the optional but from the perception that they are adding more stuff that can (as noticed) come off as additional charges for "better access". This only has fuel added to the bonfire when their home-front is fine because it caters to them. And then add the inventory limitation that some experience and you have a situation of:
Varying sub fee + $2 x # retainers + $5 app fee that still has no clarity on if the additional retainer comes from that fee or its just a "limit break" for one more. I am still talking about how all of this is optional but to many it still screams like: "How much are you willing to fork over for inventory space?"

I'll level with you: I have six extra retainers, and unless the premium app has a lot of unreported features, I won't be paying for it. And I'll buy anything. The app doesn't offer nearly enough for its price, so the answer to "how much are you willing fork over for inventory space?" is "not this much." This is like, literally the only optional content I'm not buying. If that's not "optional" I don't know what is.
Also incidentally, are we worried about the feelings of people who have six extra retainers now? That's definitely not the vibe I've gotten from the people complaining about the app.

I agree with you and don't dispute or have qualms with anything you said. I've stated before, maybe not enough, I don't necessarily agree with the app or its concepts, but in that case I just won't use/pay for it.
It's just so irrational for someone to be screaming Hollywood drama "I was forced to unsub" because of something that isn't even required to participate in.
