Striving for perfection is the path to one's downfall. 'Tis the paradox of the immaculate carrot. | Jah Bless. One God, One Aim, and One Destiny - Marcus Garvey.
Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, everywhere is war - Ras Tafari.
This, this is what the term is now used for on the forum. (Or any MMO forum basically)It's an insult used to undermine anyone who may disagree with your own personal views. Even if they share similar opinions to yours, they don't agree completely and will bring up facts that may conflict with your stance, so you call them a White Knight to take away their credibility.
"You're defending something I've set myself upon hating all aspects of unreasonably"As others have already said, it used to be an insult deriding someone who blindly defends anything they feel needs protection. Very subjective and usually applied when protecting other people.
Now it's an insult used to undermine anyone who may disagree with your own personal views. Even if they share similar opinions to yours, they don't agree completely and will bring up facts that may conflict with your stance, so you call them a White Knight to take away their credibility. If people think they're just blind defenders then they will not give attention to that person's opinion and instead side more with the original view. It's just a tactic now to remove someone from a discussion by claiming they just want to be the good guy and defend poor poor <Topic> so let's ignore them. Very similar to other online tactics to silence others.
Many people see you defend an aspect or attempt to inject objectivity or reason into an argument and lash out with "WHITE KNIGHT!"..
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
The REAL definition of White Knight: Someone who defends everything a company does, no matter what they do, to the point where even the murder and consumption of babies would receive a positive spin ("The devs have to eat too, you know").
The COMMON definition of White Knight: Someone who disagrees with you, especially when you're arguing from a sensationalist position with plenty of emotion, but very little substance.
The CURRENT FFXIV definition of White Knight: Someone who doesn't label the new app as P2W*.
There is such a thing as a White Knight, but I don't think I've ever seen the phrase misused more often than here on the O-forums.
*Because it's not. Come at me.
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.
It is pay to win, if your goal is to be a market baron. Being able to access your retainers and AH while at work is pretty big. Thankfully that's only a tiny portion of the base, and gil is not needed to progress really.
The frustration is that it never ends here.
Want to water your plants out of game? Moogle coin. Want to play with your house? Moogle coin. Dye your character's gear? Play all your toybox minigames? The potential for add-on services is large, and I think a lot of the anger that is justified comes from this.
Retainer ventures, airship missions, cacpot lottery, chocobo coloring, chocobo feeding, whatever new content they can design to make other uses of moogle coins, and don't forget the inevitable "Want more moogle coins? Head on over to the in app purchase tab"
White Knights is really just another term used for someone who is fanatically devoted to something. Much like how fan boys will argue over something, White Knights just usually defend. They rarely have counter arguments and in their eyes, their favorite thing is always pure, always good, always right. I first saw the White Knight term on the WoW forums. Each time a flaw with the game was brought up the Blizzard fanboys would rush in to defend the game, much like a Knight running to defend their kingdom.
Puh-retty much this. The REAL definition of White Knight: Someone who defends everything a company does, no matter what they do, to the point where even the murder and consumption of babies would receive a positive spin ("The devs have to eat too, you know").

I saw someone said "entitled" has been misused just as much as well, but if I need to be honest... I am trying very hard to avoid calling people this (as some of their posts sound like SE should cater to their every whim and that "trying to fix a problem" is not good enough).
If they do that “like they’ve done with the marketboard” then it would mean paying coins to do those through the app instead of doing it for free in game. Your choice would be playing as you always have, or paying extra to do them outside of the game.
Certainly they could overdo it, but I’m not worrying yet. They’re charging for convenience on a very small corner of the game. I’m neither excited or bothered by it at this point.
