What is a White Knight?

Seriously, what even is the right definition of a White Knight? I've seen that word thrown around so much that it's meaning, to me, has been devalued to little more than a childish insult. I feel like this does warrant a discussion within the community. Much like toxic and elitist, I feel like the words are thrown around way too easily. Is it White Knighting for simple defending an aspect of a policy, system, or other thing that the devs introduce into FFXIV? Or is White Knighting much more than just a simple defense of one or two things, as opposed to defending SE, no matter what.

I'd like to keep this exclusive to FFXIV, and since I know this could potentially lead to heated discussions, I ask that you do not resort to personal attacks and be mindful of fellow members.

A black knight only sees the evil in the world and confronts it. A white knight only sees the good in the world and defends it.

Basically a knight that uses some white magic to their advantage. In this game it fills the tank roll. You'll probably find a lot since it is very popular among tanks.

I see White Knighting as defending something without a critical eye. Basically always saying whatever the dev team releases is good. So basically saying something without thinking things through properly on why perhaps the person could be saying that which opposes what you think. Also if they can't give reasons as for why they defend the content when asked.

I think white knight had a distinct definition at one stage but through continuous misuse, it now has a different meaning. The original meaning was more or less blindly defending something without reasonable points of argument for your cause. The way I see it used now is basically "You don't agree with the insults I've flung at something, therefore you're just a stupid white knight for the thing that I hate. Your arguments are mute and you should go die in a fire"

I think a White Knight is someone who defends bad practices or people, for no good reason, "I like person X, so you're wrong!"



...Either that, or just a different name for Paladin.
