And here I was always on the side of just remove shirk and lower enmity modifiers across the board to get tanks into a better spot

There is no MT/OT.
WAR will probably always generate more emnity than PLD and lose less for switching from tank stance to dps stance.
So, the best option is to let the WAR pull (for the last 3+ years).
This doesn't make WAR the "MT", it's just random pug groups don't know how to utilize provoce and shirk.
PLD also has cover and Intervention. How do you utilize that to its fullest potential (free mitigation), if you are "MT'ing" the boss?

I will put it this way.....pld should be the tank that takes more damage from the boss, now we have bosses that autoattacks the second tank as well, if the ot has to take damage and do other things, pld has to be in that spot.
Pld has less burst that war but in most situation has more uptime that war thanks to the hit range from holy spirit.

missing the entire point of tanking.
In my opinion, each tank needs an individual identity. However, this identity should not make a tank locked into either MT or OT.
