EDIT: Thanks to feedback, I'm now aware of a few problems. Some animations may have to be edited or sped up in order to mesh well with the speedier gameplay we have now compared to then.
I was just looking over some old FFXIV footage (I wasn't around for 1.0-1.9) and I couldn't help but notice something about the animation. It seemed more... fluid? Like when coming to a halt, instead of just stopping abruptly, characters would slow down and then stop. Also when turning, the character would actually lean as they were turning, instead of magically spinning on the spot. It was much more noticeable in cut-scenes, where characters seemed much more lively. Watching this intro scene for Gridania made my jaw drop. The animation, the dynamic camera angles, the action, I really liked it.

I also noticed more unique animations among the races as well. For example, instead of a generic death animation for everyone, each race had a unique way of dropping. E.g. Male Roegadyns would fall back onto their sides, while female Lalafells would fall backwards onto their back, arms spread out. In general, there was quite a lot of animation which I, and possibly others, really liked. I liked the way dragoons held their spears. I preferred the way Lalas walked, arms closer to their sides rather than out far.
I would really like to see such animation return to FFXIV. Since the old games consoles are no longer supported, I feel that this would be possible. They certainly have the money for it now. Would be possible being the main problem however. I'm well aware of how much would have to be done were they to do this. Entire cut-scenes having to be re-done from the ground up, replacing current animation cycles and the like. I think however it would make the game look and feel much more immersive. Instead of mainly standing around and nodding, our character would join in on the action in cut-scenes, running, fighting, etc.
What do you guys think? Should these animations come back? Would it be worth the time and effort? Personally I would love to see this animation return.
