What is the max number of retainers?

It's not whether you can afford it or not. It's the fact that it's a subscription for the privilege of paying for another subscription but only if you're already maxed on subscriptions. It's a stupid way to set up a money grab.

It's more of a business practice, basic principle of supply and demand. Just like any other application that also offers a a free version is up to the consumer to decide if it's worth using. Therefor it's not some of money garb technique when the consumer is aware of the benefits and agrees to it. Besides paying $5 is not a big deal. If you think about it we waste it or dumber things that we probably don't even need. I mean seriously if people are willing to pay for over priced food when they know they can't afford this is not as dumb. In fact your only paying a subscription for extra content that is in high demand. SE is not saying "if you don't have this app you can't complete the game", hence OPTIONAL.

Basically, if you're already paying ~$14 for those 7 extra retainers, but you want just one more, you have to pay ~$5 for the companion app and then another ~$2 for the extra retainer.
So yes, it is that stupid.

I don't mind the app having a premium option. But that option should: INCLUDE the extra retainer, not just allow you the option to buy more. And also not give you an upper hand in playing the market with the kupo nut currency.

Hmmm The only reason I want this app is for the management of my retainers. I have 9. Paying $5 for the app that includes an extra retainer with the premium plan, extra storage space, and daily Kupo nut for muggle is not a bad deal. Besides $5 would not break my gaming allowance I set for my self...I would of probably spent those $5 in something I don't really need anyways. Like over priced coffee or Tea -.-; No Starbucks macchiato for me darn. Besides the quality of their coffee has gone down the drain and most people settle for sour coffee, don't know the difference of non expired coffee shots, and go their way pretending it's decent -.-;. yeah I can spare $5 based on that.

It doesn't include the extra retainer. It includes the option to purchase another retainer letting you purchase 8 instead of the usual 7. You still have to pay the $2 for it, and it is meaningless unless you are already paying for 7. This is why it is stupid. In order to take advantage of the 'perk' you have to spend $21 otherwise the perk doesn't exist.

Again, it's not how much it costs that is stupid. It the fact that it's a subscription where one "perk" is that you are allowed to purchase another subscription, and that "perk" is only really available if already maxing out all the other related subscriptions. It's a ridiculous way to set it up. Just bake the cost of the additional retainer into the app subscription where it just gives you the additional retainer would make far more sense.

Funny thing is, I might have been more inclined to buy pay for premium on this app if it was $7 and included an extra retainer.
E.g. I have 3 retainers, this would boost me up to 4.
SE would probably sell more premiums that way too.

Like Mhaeric says, it's the principle of paying in order to have the opportunity to pay more that's the issue.

Has there been any information on whether this app can be used when the player is already logged into the game, or does logging into the app count as being "logged in?" In other words, the player would have to log out of the app to log into the game, and can't use both at once.

It's a subscription you pay monthly. I forget whether they said if it is linked to your FFXIV subscription or not, however. I.e. whether it aligns with your renewal date with pro-rated partial months like a retainer subscription does or it just has its own renewal date.

I hate to revive a dead thread from long ago, but I am rather confused by this. I paused playing sometime in HW and didn't resume till halfway through stormblood. Played with the normal 2+6 retainers all the way till now. Had to redo my payments which involved reestablishing my retainer service. I have ALWAYS wondered why the mog station allows me to buy 7 additional retainers, but in game, I am only allowed to have 8. Can't hire past the 8th retainer in Gridania even though I'm technically paid up for 2free + 7 extra which would be 9.

I read in this thread from last year that you folks claim you CAN have 9 retainers, but I haven't found a way in the game to accomplish that. Not on a single character at least since in game you are limited to the 8 retainers they are willing to rent to you. This has always been hard for someone who is an omnicrafter and has a bajillion mats and I don't throw away stuff even from 2.0. Now I'm reading about some new companion thing that would let you get an extra retainer as well? Well perhaps not new but I completely ignored it as I ignore anything called an "app" and it came out while I was not playing so never knew any details on it.

TLDR: I've played the past year with the maximum 8 retainers, even though the mog station is willing to charge me for 9 but I cannot get 9 in game, but this thread claims I can get up to 10. What's the deal cause I'm lost here.
