So much innocence, quite cute i admit. You are right if you consider SE wants our pleasure.
FFXV, Deus Ex, and so much of their mobile game prove it false.

More, lets just see the storage history of FFXIV from 2.0
2.0 (game release) = 750 free.
2.38/2.4 (cash shop opening, 1 year after release) = 750 free - 350 cash shop
3.0 (nearly 2 years after release, 8-10 month after cash shop) = 750 free - 1050 cash shop
4.2 (i will include all SB added so, including glamourdressing) = 1180 free - 1255 cash shop

more than 50% of storage are behind a paywalk, and this began with HW.
And they dont do this like other F2P MMORPG... on F2P MMORPG generalyl you pay 1 time to improve the storage, and you are done. on FFXIV, you pay a subscription for this... so yes, a retainer cost for 1 month less than an equivalent improve of storage in F2P, but the more you need it, the more it cost...

And before "you dont need all" the fact they did add, and add more prove there will be people to buy it so it could be usefull
I wouldnt be so angry if, with HW they would have added a free retainer and not only paid one (even if ... the paid one should all be free :-°) and then again, i wait for a free new retainer... 4 years after ARR release
