I think they should not have had lockboxes.

Protean and Anemos crystals were enough. We could have had the choice to trade Protean crystals for the mount, barding, materia, etc...

I think they did the lockboxes to keep the longevity of Eureka going because you know there'll be some unlucky people who after 5000 lockboxes still haven't gotten the mount or barding or whatever.. But they could have just balanced that by making the protean->item purchase cost a LOT (like MGP mounts)

Using protean for the exchange would give them a use once people are done with their relics (and of course people who need more proteans would just trade in their anemos) and would have led to people making a choice to either work on their relic or their mount/barding at first

And using an item purchase means it'd be easy to add to the loot table to keep it updated.

Someone mentioned how they'd have liked it like the spoils in Diadem and that's exactly right - the spoils were the one thing Diadem did right (and if SE would just update the loot table to include new items, like CRAFTING MATERIA VI, you can bet the people who tolerate Diadem would go back in there more often, but I digress..... )

Like I still go back into Diadem every once in a while using Matron to get spoils to then buy fishing bait 'cause the spoils let me choose what I want from it and that's what I want. Whereas right now the only incentive I have to do Eureka is to finish my WHM weapon and to cap mendacity (as an alternative to doing Hunts, which was my primary way of capping mendacity in the past).

So overall I don't know if I'd call this an inventory management problem, but it would definitely be a reward structure problem.
