I got 8 mounts in less than 3k boxes. It seems fairly common (for a supposed to be rare mount) to me.

I'll admit I've not read all of this thread's pages because it was starting to get heated, but maybe you can limit yourself? Possibly keep two or three stacks of boxes to hold onto in case they add more items and open any you get after those? No massive loss of space and you can npc everything, since the anemos gear is not worth a sell slot on your retainer, and just keep the materia to toss onto the market board.

that's exactly what i am doing ya. my personal point is that it is too much to hand in, so for now I am just keeping those 2 stacks on retainer till they update this. I did the same thing with the crystals. I got to lv 20 with my SO and was done with the area. I did not turn in the crystals for the glam gear till they updated the crystal exchange.I'll admit I've not read all of this thread's pages because it was starting to get heated, but maybe you can limit yourself? Sure I like the mount and stuff, but under the current system (like the crystal exchange before that one hotfix) makes it not worth it.

I think they should not have had lockboxes.
Protean and Anemos crystals were enough. We could have had the choice to trade Protean crystals for the mount, barding, materia, etc...
I think they did the lockboxes to keep the longevity of Eureka going because you know there'll be some unlucky people who after 5000 lockboxes still haven't gotten the mount or barding or whatever.. But they could have just balanced that by making the protean->item purchase cost a LOT (like MGP mounts)
Using protean for the exchange would give them a use once people are done with their relics (and of course people who need more proteans would just trade in their anemos) and would have led to people making a choice to either work on their relic or their mount/barding at first
And using an item purchase means it'd be easy to add to the loot table to keep it updated.
Someone mentioned how they'd have liked it like the spoils in Diadem and that's exactly right - the spoils were the one thing Diadem did right (and if SE would just update the loot table to include new items, like CRAFTING MATERIA VI, you can bet the people who tolerate Diadem would go back in there more often, but I digress..... )
Like I still go back into Diadem every once in a while using Matron to get spoils to then buy fishing bait 'cause the spoils let me choose what I want from it and that's what I want. Whereas right now the only incentive I have to do Eureka is to finish my WHM weapon and to cap mendacity (as an alternative to doing Hunts, which was my primary way of capping mendacity in the past).
So overall I don't know if I'd call this an inventory management problem, but it would definitely be a reward structure problem.

If SE really wants to keep the lock box system at the very least they could change it so the boxes are go to your currency tab.

Omg it's you again. You need to stop.

I'm pretty sure everyone was fully aware of the inventory space issues long before lockboxes came into play. They do, however, make that issue light up like a Christmas tree when opened in bulk.
Imo, it's easier to do in Eureka because the lockbox npc and the vendors are very close to one another. Once your inventory is full, run 10 feet to a vendor, sell your things and return to open more. Rinse and repeat. It's not quite as bad as you are making it out to be. To avoid this "issue" entirely though, I wouldn't gather 31453678 lockboxes and open 0. Open a few hundred at a time. This is a self inflicted problem above all else.

I do still think we need more space but it does not help when you get 100000 of the same piece of furniture, 1000000 of the same boots or pants and way too many fireworks from the lockboxes which many of these items do not stack.
