Horizontal lines at 1440p when using real-time reflection

Hey, so i have a small problem when using real-time reflections. Weird horizontal lines seem to appear on water. One of the ways to fix it is to turn off real-time reflections, if they are on standard or higher the lines still appear. It can also be fixed by switching to 1920x1200 resolution with real-time reflection on. I also tried my old pc screen which is 1080p and it doesnt have it. It only happens on 1440p resolution. It only looks like to happen in new SB zones. I tried this screen on games like WoW and CS:GO and i had no problems there. It only seems to happen in FFXIV.

Hello DrCalm, Thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums

    When did this start?

Did anything update or change that might coincide with this issue?

    Hope to be of assistance.

It Started as soon as i got my new monitor, which would be around 6 days now. I have also found out i am not the only one with the problem. I asked around and found that another 2 people with 1440p monitors have this same issue even though they have monitors from different manufacturers. I also did a test and if i get closer to the reflection on water, the lines disappear. But as I mentioned it only happens with real time reflection turned on and resolution 1440p. It seems to me that it might be rendering bug ingame because it only happens in FFXIV. And no, nothing updated or changed, i only got a new PC screen that is 1440p and only happens on that one with resolution on max. Meaning that if i turn down the resolution from 2560x1440 to 1920x1200 the lines are no longer there.

Thank you for the reply DrCalm.

Do you have 'Use low-detail models on distant objects' and 'Cache LOD data only when necessary' checked in the graphics settings? If so, try turning them off.

Does changing the display to windowed or borderless fullscreen make any difference?

If the above does not change anything, make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date.

Also, do you have any other program or overlays running while playing the game?

I have checked the settings all of them are unchecked, changing from windowed to borderless fullscreen or fullscreen doesnt change it at all, only when lowering resolution to 1920x1200. As for the drivers, always up to date, even reinstalled them when i noticed this issue and it didnt help. As for the overlay, i dont run any overlays because they tend to break some games so i always have them turned off. As for programs i tried to run it just with the basic programs needed and it still didnt change it.

Thank you for the update DrCalm.

You can try a clean boot. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. This will make sure that no background processes are interfering with the game.

So i have tried that, i even got a new graphic card because my old one kind of died today so i had to buy a new one asap, and even with trying what you said and reinstalling many things, the lines are still there and nothing changed sadly.

Thank you for the update DrCalm.

Based on the information given, my assumption is that this is caused by the graphical settings and resolution combination. Basically, it looks like an aliasing artifact due to the distance from the water and the real-time reflections (reflections are probably rendered at a lower resolution causing some sort of pixelation at this distance). The lines probably appear because they are under just the right circumstances to create that kind of artifact. Unfortunately, the only way around it would be to change either the resolution or the real-time reflections.

Thank you for all the help with this and yeah sadly it seems like it, i have a 4k tv too that i dont usually plug into my PC because the framerate on max goes below 60 and i like my framerate high since i am used to a 1440p 144hz now... and the 4k tv has the same issue . But thats ok since nothing really can be done with it and i don't mind having the setting turned off. So thank you for your help
