but that has nothing to do with flying o.ô;Interesting viewpoints here but I just wanted to say that I prefer the fact that 3.0 and 4.0 maps are bigger than 2.0 so if a community manager is reading this please don't tell the devs that we ALL want smaller maps. What I'm looking for is for them to keep the same size map or even bigger but designed similar to Eureka basically where every location is like a painting to look at, beautiful, unique and full. Hopefully there's more support for this and even if we don't see it in 5.0 hopefully they consider it for 6.0.
the maps can be beautiful regardless of the ability to fly. i think the size of the map plays a bigger role when it comes to the details.

No flying is fine as long as it is balanced right, like getting to nodes and such.
I think people are misplacing blame on what makes the maps feel barren.
In 1.0 the maps where big because they saved memory space with the huge amount of copy and paste, so they made the maps smaller to get rid of all the copy and paste.
Now in the newer zones they tried to make them big again, and due to server limitations or ps4 limitations or whatever they want to blame, meant things needed to be spread out more.
Having spots of empty land makes it feel realistic but.. idk just look in wow , there is swamp land, dense forests and such...
Smaller maps implies it will feel too small with flying to fit the room to make zones feel fuller.
Eureka is small though, i think the servers would explode if they had bigger maps then HW or SB zones while having it look like full everywhere like Eureka.Interesting viewpoints here but I just wanted to say that I prefer the fact that 3.0 and 4.0 maps are bigger than 2.0 so if a community manager is reading this please don't tell the devs that we ALL want smaller maps. Is it too much to ask to have flying AND better map design ?
For example, have a dense jungle with clearings where you can take off and fly over the canopy, but if you want to travel below the canopy you have to find a clearing and walk. If you try to fly your mount underneath the canopy it forces you to land or dismount completely.
Eureka is a great map to be sure, and being forced to get around on foot certainly helped to appreciate it more (and it's for that reason we weren't allowed to fly right away in 3.0/4.0 zones), but there have been many times where I wished I could fly up into the trees and other out-of-reach places. I'd rather they not take flying out. I know this discussion is asking a "if you want X would you be willing to sacrifice Y" sort of question, but I feel if they're going to give us these huge zones, the least they could do is fill them in a little more. I'm not trying to undermine the amount of work it takes to build these zones mind you. It just feels like a waste seeing all these buildings you can't enter (Namai, Kugane, and the Azim Steppe yurts break my heart) or landmarks that aren't given any lore or explanation (The Northeastern area of the Dravanian Forelands map that's only accessible by flying, The Arms of Meed in The Peaks, Dimwold in the Fringes, Swallow's Compass in Yanxia, just to name a few). There are just so many missed opportunities to make the zones richer.

yeah I replied to that, servers would simply explode, got to remember server limtationsIs it too much to ask to have flying AND better map design ?

I'd rather keep it as it is. You have to explore to unlock the ability to gain that easier way to get around.

One of my favorite ways to appreciate the beauty of a region is to just fly around it for a while, and I couldn't get the same perspectives of everything if that took that away.
Yes, I'm all for more beautiful places. But don't take away flying in some misguided attempt to force us to enjoy it. The players who want to enjoy will do so.
No, do not take flying away. It is implemented in such a way that you gain it by completing the main story and some side story of a zone plus exploring to find the aether currents. That means you have explored the place on the ground. Once that is done I really enjoy getting to see things from the air and enjoying the cool things you can't get to or see from the ground. If you really want to see things from the ground you have that option. Forcing everyone to be grounded after they have experienced flight is a bad thing. It is one of the big reasons I quit WoW after they removed flight in Warlords and brought it back in a terrible way that they continued with future expansions. A quick way to alienate players is removing something that many enjoy.

I like flying around and finding hidden nooks and crannies. The ARR zones are beautiful but it's not as easy to explore them, even with the increased mount speeds. I think we got stuck with bland zones due to the nature of the environment this time (all dat brown man), but I hope future areas are more vivid and lively.
If they give us a compelling reason to stay grounded and interact with the zones more I don't mind not being able to fly. But as it is they're just wide expanses of small target areas that you drop into, kill/harvest the objective, and move on from. There's no reason to spend a ton of time on the ground when there's precious little of interest to do.
