    Steam and Non-Steam upgrades

    I have a friend who purchased the steam version of the game and currently only has realm reborn. Recently we discovered that Newegg is having a sale on Stormblood and my friend wants to upgrade. However we need to know if he is locked out of this upgrade because he owns the steam version of the game? Also would he be region locked out if I bought the game as a gift to him since I live in the US and he lives in Canada?

    I can't think of a single game that considers Canada and the US as separate regions for the purposes of region locking, so that won't be an issue. Billing region pricing, yes, but not region locking. I've bought many games from US sites as a Canadian with no issues, including this one.

    As for using the PC version upgrade to steam, I believe they are NOT compatible. From their official store website https://store.na.square-enix.com/pro...-stormblood-pc they have a big disclaimer saying they aren't. I imagine buying it from a third party would do nothing to change that.

    IMPORTANT:
    Please note that the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Stormblood expansion pack also includes FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward. This package requires FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Starter Edition (A Realm Reborn) to play the game.
    This product is not compatible with the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. If you’ve purchased FFXIV: A Realm Reborn on Steam, then you must also purchase FFXIV: Stormblood on Steam to upgrade your existing account.

    Well thanks for the heads up on that part at least. Still Official confirmation on the Canada/US Issue would be great in case I send it as a steam gift at some point

    As far as I know, the game only has NA, EU, and possibly JP versions, so you should be fine gifting the steam version, due to living in the same region.

    I'm fairly certain that if you purchase the game via Steam, you HAVE to keep buying the game from Steam, any other version won't be compatible. But I believe that's what Mhaeric just said, that bolded bit is from the SE store product details.

    If your friend has redeemed a Steam code on the service account, the only games that will be compatible with the account is games purchased through Steam. As far your question regarding region US and Canada are both part of the NA region.
