I had always felt that Paladin should be a hybrid advanced job that requires Gladiator and Conjurer to attain a certain advanced level. I would have suggested 41+ or 51+, depending on how soon the cap is going to be raised to 60.

I have also felt that Dark Knight should be a hybrid advanced job that requires Marauder and Thaumaturge to attain a certain advanced level. I would have suggested 41+ or 51+, depending on how soon the cap is going to be raised to 60.

Neither should require that you sacrifice a chance at losing another, however I wouldn't be against the concept of adding a special prerequisite challenge to make such a pairing on the same character possible.
