Thoughts on DPS Class Choice please

Hey yall ive been debating the past few days which class i want to play the most. And ive broken it down to MNK, BLM, and SAM. But cannot break it down any further. From my understanding all three are considered the “Selfish DPS” i enjoy all three but cannot break it fown further to which to play. What are yalls thoughts? Thanks!

Well, that depends a lot on your preferences.

First and easiest distinction to make, I think, would be do you prefer to stand at range or be up close? Do you mind having very restricted mobility? BLM is essentially a turret mode caster and movement can have very sharp DPS penalties if you don't manage it well/don't know the fight in already. On the flipside, it can put out some really ridiculous burst damage.

On another note, though, FFXIV's job system means you can play them all, what you're really deciding is what you want to play first.

Yeah, without knowing what it is you like about them its tough to give a recommendation. I know which one I prefer, but that doesnt mean its right for everyone who isnt me.

Agreed. I love Samurai because I love the aesthetics, using a katana, weaving multiple shinten into my rotation, and the smooth flow it has. Plus it was my main in FFXI.

What it really comes down to in the end is personal preference. Namely, which class appeals to you the most?

go mnk (not as selfish as sam and blm), if you like it when getting at lv 50(+), stick to it, other wise try out sam (starts at lv 50), mnk and sam share most of the gear.., so if you decide at 50(+) to switch, you can still use most if you gear on sam

blm is a pain (like sam not wanted / selfish..., but as caster even harder to get in pfs)

.. just don't decide till 50(+), before most classes are simple (imo mnk is more fun than blm at pre lv 50)

If you do go as Monk, you'll be able to swap to Samurai if you like and save on gear as both Monk and Samurai use Striking sets.

    Why not Ninja?

Well why not play them all?

But practically speaking, play MNK. MNK and SAM share gear and if you arent a cutting edge raider, you can scrape by without BIS and proper melding. MNK will just take longer to level, as it doesn't start at 50 (but not too much longer, honestly leveling jobs is easy. You should be able to easily hit 70 in 2-3 days of focused effort) and it's currently more preferred.

Yeah but weekly lockouts make it so you're going to want to have alts anyway...

I played both Monk and Samurai in the expansion. Monk became more fun to play and got a lot of it's core issues fixed as of this last job adjustment (shortened cooldown to perfect balance, Riddle of Wind is actually useful)

Additionally many monks are now able to put out more damage than samurai in addition to bringing party utility skills like Mantra and Brotherhood. The big difference between the monk and samurai is that monk is heavily dependent on positionals, so fights like O7s are going to be a pain since the boss likes to turn around a lot whereas samurai is less heavily penalized for missing positional attacks. Additionally Samurai is more of the job that hits harder and slower while monk hits weaker but faster. So if you like the speedier game play with low GCD monk might be for you.
