    Cause he is edgy.

While in FFVII he was pretty much just a thrall to Jenova.
    Not really.

Jenova had basically been reduced to braindead hunk of meat at that point after being sealed away for ages in a geological stratum and whatever the Cetra did to it.
Sure, the powers were all there, and it was very much alive, but nobody was home anymore.
Then Sephiroth went and moved into the drivers seat so to speak.

Though there is admittedly an argument to be had that Jenova's instincts had some influence, the whole thing with the mind being affected by the state of the body and all that (See also: Person that get's turned into a frog instinctively trying to eat flies)

Why is Sephiroth considered the strongest villain?
I could write a very lenghty post on the matter, but i don't think anyone would even read it.
Certainly nobody ever has whenever the topic came up on any other forum.
It's always "Too long, didn't read" "To many details i don't understand/too complicated, stopped reading less than a fifth of the way through" or something else along those lines.

Also, he's not. That would be Bhunivelze, creator and destroyer of entire universes, even if he never got the chance to act on the latter.

Funnily enough Nael ended up being that common fan theory of being the thrall to her "Jenova" AKA Bahamut. But yeah Sephiroth wasn't controlled by Jenova though learning about her/having her alien genes certainly ended up not being good for anyone.

Well, except for Hojo, since the bastard planned for that to happen "For Science!"

Basically everything that goes wrong over the course of FF7 is Hojo's fault if you trace it back far enough.
Jenova wasn't even really a threat anymore until Sephiroth went and merged with it, it had been sitting there doing absolutely nothing for decades even after it got dug up.

Sephiroth is the one with all the power and the primary threat, but Hojo is the schemer that set the whole mess into motion in the first place.
Bonus points for Hojo being Sephiroth's biological father and the one responsible for pumping him full of Jenova Cells in-uterus.

This is what happens when you embrace science unconstrained by morals or even basic common sense.

I was sooooo happy I got to kill him in Dirge of Cerberus! If he appears as a boss again and I get to kill him again, I'll be cackling like a clown for a month! Muwahahaha! >XD

Oh! What about Barrett's former best friend being a boss You know, his step daughter's real father and had that theme song "Man with the Machine gun arm" (Did I get that title right...?) .

Wouldn't he make a pretty good first boss right? Or maybe Angeal or Genesis from Crisis Core! Especially Genesis! He was a really cool character and would LOVE to see him reappear in FFXIV as a boss!

Sephiroth's popularity IMO stems from the Final Fantasy series being fairly under the radar for a very large portion of the gaming population at the time until FF7's arrival on playstation. As such much of it is likely nostalgia goggles as it was their first FF game and as such is the most memorable for them.

I kind of hope it isn’t FF7 but insted super bosses or gods someone mentioned bhenivelze (not sure if I spelt that right) but there’s other super powerful superbosses that could easily fit the fray like penance, emerald weapon, Enuo, Minervia , Lost Babil, or even absolute virtue (a boss far more infamous then Sephi)

Hell he is looking at the anomaly of hero’s we could fight WoL or any of the large hero cast

Or fallen hero’s like garland / chaos / feral chaos ect

They have a lot of choises that rant nearly as done to death as our one winged mamas boy (not saying I hate him but he has been done to death)

They could maybe force Garland/Chaos to work, but I think it's less likely for other reasons. II, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIII...none of those games have a final boss with another form, though at least a couple have the somewhat different "final boss from nowhere" going on instead. III has all that plus the Cloud of Darkness and all its sub-bosses have already been used, which may end up being an extra point against XII too. XI did have multiple final bosses with second forms, but again I feel doubtful they'd use it for this.
    Except Ultimecia has several forms.

Or maybe we'll get a mega long fight with only Omega but taking the form of 4 or 5 different bosses from the series during said fight ?
That would be quite a challenge
