The game really needs to consider a decay system, so essentially if you don't complete a certain number of duties (mentor roulette maybe), or finish certain content by a specific time then a player will lose their Mentor crown and would need to do whatever is necessary to get it back. One thing is I could just stop playing today and then come back in 1yr, but I would still have my crown despite being behind on mechs of new content and possibly any job changes that occur during that time. I would not expect every mentor to know every single mech, but if you run content regularly then you are in a much better position to assist other players if they need help isn't it.

Normally when I see someone with a crown I think to myself, woah, what a dumbass. That's the rep it's got, at least on the EU servers. It was a good thought, no doubt, but in practice it doesn't work. It needs a revamp at best and stricter rules for people who do opt to be mentors. Leaver mentors, flaming mentors, mentors who have no idea what they are doing... You name it, I've seen it.

I don't think it needs a revamp. The point of the system basically is to help green people. New adventurer status disappears when you hit stormblood. So no one has any obligation to help others. Especially a lv60 person with no new adventurer status, unless they used jump potions. But the system is here for green status people and lv60 mentors have the means to help them. there is no need to update the system to 70 rn. Maybe in 5.0, if they make new adventurer status disappear by the end of sb story. Imo, if you are lv60+ player and don't know how to play, don't accuse mentors for not helping you, accuse yourself. There are many guides on internet and on youtube etc. Mentors are here for new adventurers who needs help with their classes, jobs, understanding the game, understanding crafting & gathering system, how things work etc. They aren't here for giving savage tips or lv 70 rotation tips. I think the system is overrated by playerbase a bit.

The Returner system and the Duty Roulette disagree with you. Mentors should be able to give Lv70 advice as well.

The Duty Roulette is there to fill queues and anyone thinking otherwise is deluding themselves. The Returner system on the other hand is a good argument, but still, it's mostly "hey here's what changed with the job since the last time you were here" and not necessarily that much more

I think people would be more inclined to stick around for harder duties if they were actually rewarded better for it.

Most mentors only run the roulette because they want the achievements and they're naturally not going to feel terribly inclined to stick around for something like extreme Heavensward primals when they could just back out and get an ARR dungeon instead.

More incentive to stay would probably help, yeah. I rarely get anything other than a guildhest, but when I do get something else...it's usually an Ex primal. The other day I got Shiva Ex, for example. Not a terribly hard one to learn, thankfully, but if it were Thordan...I'd have probably stayed for a few wipes and called it a day if no progress was being made, but I would have tried to teach the new players a few things first. If there's actual progress being made I'd probably feel more inclined to stay. There just comes a point sometimes where you feel like you're simply wasting time.

There's a long lasting suggestion to still have it tick for the achievement if you run out of time. Because if you were there for an hour on Titan Ex and weren't kicked for AFK, you probably tried to help and that should count for something. I'd add to that it should also count if there's a vote abandon in the last 15 minutes of the duty because if you've gotten that far you might just legit not have enough time for another attempt but you still tried.

well a player can be returned after 2 years and still be considered returner but he / she is basically a sprout.that's why they added that status i think because most of the returned players i have seen play mediocore to bad, mostly because they don't know how to play or forgot.mentors has no obligation to help a player with any kind of newcomer status. It is there to help people with basics. That's why you need 1 tank, 1 healer, 1 dps for example. You only need to know tanking basics, healing basics, and how to prioritize your dps. Like how to pull enemies, using cds and keeping aggro as tanks, like not applying regen as healer before pulls and how to react as a healer, like when to apply dots or debuffs or how to use combos efficiently as dps. No one expects to give a lv60 ninja rotation guide from a mentor. But if that ninja doesn't know how to use his job properly and if you are a ninja as mentor, ofc you can help. But you have no obligation, that comes from almighty crown :3

Let mentor system be like a novice could ping a random mentor that has volunteered themselves for the function; kind of like customer support. This prevents public embarrassment newer players often have when struggling with earlygame mechanics, keybinds, macros, or settings.
But the bolded part is exactly what the icon is for, so why remove it? I've received /tells from sprouts near me asking a question about something. Of course I can't be sure the crown was why they picked me each time but the intended purpose of the icon is to advertise yourself as someone who is willing to give advice.
