Will comm the healer if I'm like 'thank god we lived, that was a marathon'
Will comm DPS if I'm like 'EPIC PULLS WERE AMAZING EVERYTHING DIED IMMEDIATELY' (although then I'm like 'crap which one did better??')
Looking at my standards, it is clear DPS needs to have a higher skill level than healer to get my attention. I think it's because there are two DPS slots and I am still a newbie sort of person who can't tell who is doing what or if what they're doing is good. I'm also very busy dodging mechanics since everything is in my face.
I don't know why I get comms. I'm just your standard idiot tank. The only time I deserved it was when I started stance dancing to pop Inner Release on that one boss in Castrum Abania to murder the medicine loader hand because I HATE THAT STUPID BOSS SO MUCH. Fell Cleave carries me, no regrets.
My rules for giving out commends:
In a dungeon, if tank is doing huge groups (Which I main SMN so I always demand huge groups /AoEAddict) and the healer is using AoEs (Holy, etc) and the tank is staying alive. I commend the tank. They are are rotating cooldowns enough that the healer is having next to no trouble.
If the healer is having a hard time keeping the tank alive in big pulls, but they are trying, I give the healer the commend. OR I give the healer the commend if I see them save someone's life with Rescue or a last second heal. (This happens quite a bit tbh)
For a DPS, I give it to them if they they are doing their job role. Such as, I despise BLM that don't AoE that much in big pulls. OR if they are lowered geared and they are trying their hardest to stay alive, I will give it to them since they to continue to try.
If all conditions are met, I have a priority system. Healer that goes out of their way to save someone else > Tank that regulates CDs > DPS > Healer that is having a hard time but managing > DPS that is still trying
I think I put more effort into determining who gets the commend than I do the actual dungeon...xD
I actually watch how everyone performs and comm accordingly. If a healer is doing 0 DPS he sure as hell won't get a comm from me. :|
well of course healers get more commendations without else the entire party dies we are the most important role of course so it only makes sense that we get the most praise as it should be.

Generally speaking, I comm the healer as tank, comm the tank as healer, and comm the DPS as DPS. There are exceptions when people don't put enough effort in their roles, with most DPS players ending up being guilty of.
As far as getting comms go, I gain so much as both tank and healer to the point where I lost track of which role I got more commendations from. Apparently, I assume that the players I got grouped with had quite a bit of bad tanks and healers, which probably explains the commendations I earn.

I always always ALWAYS comm the DPS. we get no love alot of the times and healers and tank just show up and most people cream their jeans O: - joking- but yeah.. DPS for me.

Everyone has their own specific things they look for when deciding who they give commendations to, but I think most people can agree that those who ask for commendations generally won't receive them. People see commendations as something you earn based on your performance and attitude, and by asking for them it makes it seem like the person you were throughout the dungeon was fake.
As for who gets most commendations between tank and healer. Based off my personal experience, it feels like healers get more. I usually run dungeons with my girlfriend and for ARR and HW we were a tank/healer couple, and she has absolutely sh*t all over my commendation total almost 4x over (she is at 11k and I'm at almost 3k). It felt like we'd come out of an expert roulette and she'd have 3 commendations because even the SMN's pet commended her.

My default is giving the comm to the tank in order to encourage them to continue tanking. When I first began tanking it was stressful and for whatever reason I end up with jerk BRDs who pull everything and berate me for not tanking better. So going off that, I assume most tanks have met some toxic players during their runs so a comm their way would make their day. The only times I don’t comm the tank is if they were the ones being toxic.

I mostly get commies from this macro I have. Its not a macro asking for commies, just one saying I'm a lala and that I'm cute. Some people "jokingly" punt me, but most hug or kiss me, yay.
I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.
