    Asking for commendations is lame.
Giving advice when not asked is bothering.
Giving not asked advice with the goal of getting all commendations is lame and bothering.

As tank, 9/10 times I get at least 1 commendation. Since the healer is my bf, we usually give ours to the DPS who really impressed us. And if he's not healing in my party, I almost never commend a healer, but again, the DPS has to be extraordinary.

I personally give advice just when I see the message "one or more party members..." blah blah. And I make it short and to the point.

I give commendations based on these factors.
    1) Tank did an awesome job.
    2) Healer did an awesome job.
    3) DPS did an awesome job.

In dungeons my commendations usually go between the tank or healer if they do something to make the run very smooth. For DPS I give it to them if they LB when they were supposed to or just managed to save us when things went south. In larger party instances I am more willing to give it to DPS that I see do something nice. I also give my commendations to those who give actual helpful advice rather than complain.

I get slightly more on healer than tank, though it's fairly close.

As for your particularly scenario, OP. I will not comm anyone who asks for one, especially not so they can get mentorship. The fact they asked based on that makes me assume they only wanted the crown.

I rarely tank, but I do get more commendations on healer versus DPS in all types of content (4-man, 8-man, and 24-man). But that's a given.

I won't comm people who ask for them. You earn comms; you don't beg for them.

See I never did that, I wanted to be at least partly qualified for mentor status when I got my crown, I'm one of those mentors who takes their status seriously.

For me, healer beyond any doubt. As a tank, I tend to see one which I always presume is the healer but when I play WHM, I come out with two, even sometimes three depending on how much I was baby sitting the DPS. I think it just comes down to the fact that its easier to see when a healer is doing their job because you're hp bar is being topped off, holy is going off on big pulls etc. But a tank? You mostly notice them when they mess up and something tries to take your face off.

Unwanted advice is usually looked down upon for whatever reason. They may have thought it as insulting.

Every now and then I see people who have a macro that says something along the lines of "don't forget to comm your healer"

I usually comm the healer cuz they have to put up with my derpy ass xD

Occasionally I will give dps a comm if I feel they are playing above average.

As I tank it seems like I don't get many, like it's just random pity comms because tank spot is the first on the list lol
