Question about locked servers.

Hello! I'm a bit new to the game still- but I wanted to know if locked servers had chances of opening up when players had left- or if SE decides? The reason I asked, is because I'm interested in the RP that balmung server has, but I noticed it's always locked.

I saw that they re-opened the server during housing, however because of financial reasons I was a little late getting to it. Will there be other chances, and is it always an announcement? Thank you!

That server you're likely never getting into. SE has been making efforts to get people to leave that server.

All other servers tend to open up for short windows, and then the bots jam up the space.

Official policy is to open servers as their active playerbases allow. If balmung ever falls below whatever active player threshold SE has set, it'll open again. Before the recent opening however, it had been closed for a very long time so you may want to look at joining one of the other "rp" servers.

Any worlds listed in the server status list as "congested worlds" are closed for the foreseeable future. Currently, Balmung is the only NA world with that status, so you will need to choose a different world.

Any other world, if you attempt to create a character and it won't let you, it means that at that particular moment, the server was too busy for a new character. You might be able to get you in if you come back during slower hours.

Thank you all for the information! I'll research into other servers, and see if I can find an alternative. So far I've been seeing Mateus as another option, but it seems like the actual people on Mateus (who were there before the influx of RPers?) Are incredibly furious at the new additions. I'd have to read more, but that's a bit unsettling, and I'd rather not be yelled at for doing things that I like :c.

Wouldn't really know. The rp community to me is a very odd animal. Not that I disapprove of RP-ing. I used to do it in other games, but the FFXIV RP people are on a whole other level. I have heard that many other servers have active RP communities though, and I doubt the short time balmung was open has consolidated them all back to one server.

Balmung will likely reopen whenever people start tapering off again. Im fairly certain rmt bots are a good portion of the people that joined us when it last reopened, so once they start getting banned we'll start deflating little by little. In the meantime, Mateus is probably your best bet. There is a small vocal group that dislikes rpers, but despite that there is still a decent sized rp community there.

I am not really familiar with Mateus, but I really doubt all of the RPers moved away from Mateus to Balmung. Some did no doubt, but probably not all that many.
If you play during EU hours there is also Omega which has an active RP community. Smaller than Balmung to be sure, but that just means you have a chance to get a house

It also depends on the kind of RP you are looking for... Balmung has RP pretty much EVERYWHERE, going on at any time and there's tonnes of casual RP, so if that's your deal, go for it! I love to RP myself, but I like my RP to have a little more structure... being familiar with the RP group characters and having an idea of the kinds of plotlines people want to follow. However there are small RP communities in a number of places. You can check out http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/ for any information. It's *mainly* Balmung stuff there but there are some RP communities off of Balmung and it's a good place to check.
