I couldn't say about now...but back in Beta I did this. Except I never tried to run the game from the flash drive. I would always copy the data from the flash drive to whatever computer I had access to and it worked just fine. I did this because I didn't own a laptop and was travelling to visit family so I would use their computers to play while I was away.

Before I got my new computer this past month, I was playing off of a flash drive. Granted you can't drag and drop the files because it would ruin directory path names. But, if you actually install the game into the flash drive, it'll set up everything perfectly.

Well, I copied the game's files from my PC to my laptop without ever installing it there and after running the config everything is running fine. So I'm pretty sure that it works :P

USB transfer rate is too slow, FFXIV use a lot of files and performance will be sluggish at best.

But you can try to use ThinApp from VMWARE, it make any app portable:

With windows 7 & usb3 port + usb3 flash drive it is easy to put it on & play off there, Easyist way to do it without much explanation is this:
Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools ->Create & format hard disk Partitions
Now format the flash drive as part of your system & give it a number, install FF14 from disk onto the flash drive, simple.

    NOTES:
*if will remain that drive number on any windows 7 computer so make sure its a high letter like Z: drive
*you will need any nessassary drivers on both computers & latest direct X
*Your my games folder will still be on your standard C: drive but you can move/copy it onto your flash drive & copy onto another computer
*yes it also works with usb 2.0

No reason for that, FAT32 work faster with smaller partitions.

I wonder how patches would work if you installed on thumb drive on one computer, then went to another computer?

Although I don't think I would consider playing off a USB device unless eSATA or USB 3.0, of which I only have the former.
