Disconnects and Error 90002 every few minutes

Hi all, I have an on-again off-again problem with random disconnects with this game. Looks like the problem is on again and I'm getting disconnected every few minutes, making the game essentially unplayable. I've contacted my ISP, WOW!, about the problem, but they say there's nothing wrong on their end. Is there anything I can do to check my connection or limit these errors? Any help would be appreciated. I'm on the east coast in the U.S. and playing on Malboro server.

Hello meowning, Thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums

Can you elaborate on the kind of issue you are having?

    Please provide:

    - Platform (PC, PS4, Mac)
    - the nature of the latency
    - Type of connection (wired or wireless)
    - Other programs running while the game is playing (if any)
    - Everything you have tried to resolve the issue

    Hope to be of assistance

    Hi Ariellendera,

I'm playing on PC with a wired connection. The game will be a little laggy sometimes, but most importantly I am totally disconnected from the server every 5-10 minutes. Not running anything super crazy in the background, maybe Discord and Microsoft Security Essentials. I've tried unplugging the modem and router for 10 seconds and restarting them, which does not seem to fix the problem. I believe my drivers are all up to date as well.

Thank you fro the update meowning.

I would suggest closing any programs running in the background (such as Discord) even if you don't think it will interfere.

Make sure you make an exception on your anti-virus/firewall for Final Fantasy XIV.

Check the following Port Ranges on your router/modem to ensure that the following Port Ranges have been opened/forwarded/triggered:
    ▼TCP
    54992 through 54994,
    55006 through 55007,
    55021 through 55040
Your ISP may forward these ports for you.*

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

I've opened my router's settings but I'm not entirely sure how to check which ports are open or make any changes. I'm using a TP-Link router. Still getting many disconnects even with all other background programs closed.

Hello! Thank you for your response. You can contact your ISP regarding the ports. They can check them for you and open them if need be.

    Hope to be of assistance.

Are you running on cable or dsl, and what is your packages speed? (up and down)

I would also like to know your connection status on the character screen (ie: poor, good, excellent).

Is a possibility also that a node between you and the server is incurring DDoS attacks, which may not be fixable by SE or your ISP as it's somewhere in between. I used to have these problems, and had to resort to using a proxy program, like tunnelbear or WTFast. The latter cleared up much of my problems, but it is a paid service. You can use it for free for I think two weeks by setting up a paypal account without a funding source (which means billing is impossible if you forget about it). It's worth a try and might improve things for you.

Thank you for the update meowning.

Try contacting your ISP to make sure the ports are forwarded.

You can also try a clean boot. For Windows 8 and 10, simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. For Windows 7, Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility. On the General tab, click the Selective startup option, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!
