Mouse input stuttering on HDD access

When my HDD is being accessed (a different one from the one FF14 is on, Final Fantasy is on my system SSD), my mouse input is stuttering. It will hitch and stop for short moments while the HDD light is flashing.
Gamepad input is not affected, also input in Windows itself is fine.
This started happening with one of the recent Windows updates (Win10 Pro 1709) and is only reproducable in Final Fantasy.
Changing fullscreen/window options won't help, same for software cursor. The Framerate remains solid and high during these hitches, also lowering the graphics options will not affect the problem in any way.

Good morning and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

What exactly do you mean that the HDD is being accessed? Is the only indication that the HDD light is flashing, or do you have another program open that is on the second drive?

How frequent is this issue? Every few seconds or only occasionally (or somewhere in between)?

Do you have a specialized mouse of any kind, or is it simply the mouse that came with the PC? Is it wired or wireless?

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

I noticed that the mouse stutters sync up with the HDD light flashing most of the time. It happened during a download of a large file on Steam as well as during an antivirus scan of my system drive, and when I moved a big file between two drives the game isn't running on.

It will happen every time one of the above processes is running, or when windows is moving files, defragmenting, loading another program or downloading larger files. During "normal" operation, when nothing but the game is running, it will usually not happen. But as soon as any other process starts (like an automatic windows update/download) the mouse will start hitching.

It's a wired logitech Proteus Core g502, with the latest Logitech drivers and software installed. I have tried using the default windows mouse driver as well as disabling the logitech software, but it didn't fix the problem.

Thank you for the info Hurz.

It does seem that if anything something is accessing the second drive, then there will be some sort of interference with the mouse. I would suggest not running anything in the background while you are playing the game. I'd also recommend performing a clean boot. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC.

Minimizing access of the secondary drive will help with the hitching issue. I'd also suggest starting some programs that you might usually use one at a time to see how they affect the mouse. This will help isolate which (if any) may be causing the problem.

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!
